Lots More fabulous items/ideas for a BioShock Rapture MMORPG

--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- -

Part 131

--- --- --- --- ---

Popular Rapture Movie Serial : The King of the Submariner (Torpedo ?) Men  :

(Google "The King of the Rocket Men")

Evildoers Beware !!! Whoooooshhhhhhh !!!!

--- --- ---

An AE Traincar Issue :

AE Traincars - No need for those external Cockpit doors - a waste of design effort (overcomplication) if it was to be real. Rapture sea doors need to be substantial (because of the water pressure) and its another potential "point of failure" (seal system, etc ...). Entry should be through the main cabin (still with that cockpit/cabin separation door, as already seen). The cockpit itself is rather oversized, and WOULD be smaller (and there's no seat in it, which also would be an improvement needing fixing).

They didn't want to have to show you/have you traverse the main cabin (clunky game movement meant wide aisle, and to fit proper seats it would force the whole vehicle to be wider than it is portrayed (My MK1/Mk2 designs ( diagrams ) IS made a bit wider to make this more realistic).

FIX MY DESIGN PIX TO REMOVE THOSE EXTRA DOORS

--- --- ---

Puzzle Bits that Players Find Over Time :

  • Put the pieces together to make useful things (neat decorations might be considered 'useful')
  • Documents with clues to some goodie (its amazing what Splicers used for toilet paper)
  • A "Painting" decoration (lots of unique artwork to use ripped up and the pieces out there to be found)
  • Some very useful mechanism (enabling something the Player couldn't do/expand before)
  • Trading of parts between Players (Have X, Seek Y)
  • Use of Workbench and Bulletin Board (nifty interfaces) to keep pieces organized and easily visible (not buried away in stacked inventory Containers)
  • Can be a Group activity where many Players add their piece to the 'puzzle' that will be shared by the community (or a 'Party'/'Association'). "HEY LETS FIX THAT OLD TRAM -- WERE ONLY MISSING A B C X Y Z and Q " ...

--- --- ---

"Associations" between Players  :

A bit looser than a 'Adventuring Party' or a Kinship/Clan/Whatever

Players can have Multiple 'memberships' (unless the Association is defined with a limitation)

Associations can be defined by players with various conditionals and limitations.

Usual Role definitions for people who organize whatever the Association is for.

Lots of features seen in existing MMORPG games (and more could be defined/refined)

--- --- ---

Letter to Herr Comstock :

The Baron von Zeppelin hereby demands that you stop using the word 'Zeppelin' in reference to your ungainly and poorly designed flying vehicles. The Zeppelin company's products are the result of careful and dedicated design and knowhow, and their proud name cannot IN ANY WAY be allowed to refer to your cobbled together monstrocities.

Cease and Desist or further strong action will be applied to you.

--- --- ---

need a game activity page

Go Through the Motions :

Sort of Tutorial-like, but with so many aspects available in the MMORPG, there is much more than just learning how to work a basic interface button.

The Player gets exposed to all the many different aspect of life in New Rapture (and alot of potential/useful shortcuts and actions). If you constantly don't know about something, or have fears of "IT IS TOO COMPLICATED TO USE !!", then many Players will never use those things, and potentially miss out on a large part of the Game.

The Player is led through the motions of doing the interactions/activities manually so that they understand all the elements involved (And see it isn't hard), and then the shortcuts are shown and walked through (the way the Player can create standing orders and processes that can get done automatically - to eliminate tedious stuff).

Used also for enabling various City Services (may have a Mission profile that needs to be 'achieved' - except without the usual mind-numbing repetitiveness, which is the recourse of so many MMORPGs).

Its only logical that a more complex game would have more extensive Tutorials (and it can be easier to learn by directly doing it In-Game, than just reading some Internet-based Instructional (which there would be also in this MMORPG).

--- --- ---

Make more use of the word "Pan-Dimensional"

Make more use of the phrase "Derp-type-logic"

--- --- ---

Splicers Seen in the Little Sisters Crazy Dollhouse (LilSister-Vision in Persephone in BS2)  :

Edwardian dress, olympian proportions (proportions tall with head 1/9th size of height), feigned disinterested demeanor ... (Assume them shaking inside in fear when a Little Sister walked by wondering "did the Lamb Bitch sign my death warrant, and that things comin for me and is gonna draw out my lifesblood, as I'm held down like all the others I've seen that done to ???)

Kinda weird that (~7 year old) Little Sisters would be so knowledgeable to envision/mentally-create this - *EXCEPT* this is DELTA seeing it through a LS's eyes (those tasty tasty eyes so much sought by Splicers ...)

Stranger might've been animated Teddy Bears or Wooden Soldiers or other 'toy' images (maybe some of Rapture's (friendlier) Cartoon characters ... Hmm those 'Edwardians' WERE from some odd cartoon the LS might've seen ... 'THE ADVENTURES OF J. P. FARNSWORTH AND Dr. FRISKEY (his cat)' )

--- --- ---

Sorry In Columbia There Would Be NO Women Police Officers/Constables (even the Nazis didn't have Women soldiers) :

For a place allegedly claiming to be based on 1900 America, it contained alot of gratingly stupid/unlikely/incoherent things -- more Fantasy than the Bio Shock was supposed to be.

--- --- ---

Lots of Floors in Tall Buildings :

Because of the need for Rapture building's pressure withstanding structure (with the ~ 600ft depths involved) there is a greater separation between building floors to accommodate thick floor plates (of reinforced concrete) which extend cross the building to support the opposite massive forces pressing inward on both sides of those exterior walls.

Thus all the stairs are a bit longer in order to climb a greater than normal floor separation.

Unfortunately the building views you see through the windows don't reflect this extra spacing (besides they're often having at least twice the number of floors which buildings in Rapture should be limited less than (20-25 floors, instead of 50), which can still look plenty enormous, particularly when a majority of Raptures buildings shouldn't be much more than 5 floors).

--- --- ---

In post-fall Rapture you might want to be wary eating the 'sausages'.

--- --- ---

Splicers Continued Various Elements of Rapture's Society :

Off-Fleet-Hall shows :

  • Asshat - The Musical
  • Hey Mr Plasterman
  • Walking Dead - The Musical !!!
  • The Protector Rings Twice (a drama aka "Daddy Dearest")
  • Dr Tuttles (or Why I Learned to Fear Nazi Zombies, and Love the Bomb)
  • Mr Ryan - the one man show
  • Fort Frolic Follies (aka "Cohen Follies of 1960")

Entertainment became a currency ... (not just those dreary personal Audio Diaries, but the longer 'show' and Music recordings). Records and old Magazines, etc ...

--- --- ---

X Punk ...  :

Didn't they know that all you have to do is to "Glue some Gears on" things to make them "tek-no-log-ical" ??? Woulda save em TONS of development money, so they wouldn't have to 'stress out' so much. It wouldn't have looked any worse than so many of the game mechanisms they came up with.

--- --- ---

Gibberish Made From Real Terms :

For your gaming pleasure : "Excitonic Condensation" (great buzzword usable for just about anything you want - if you are hack gamewriters). Add "Graphitic Bernal Stacked Configurations" and we can have a truely righteous techo-gibberish hootenanny.

Real terms variously related to superconductors and whatnot. But I'm sure that they could be exploited for game related things which they have little to do with (Maybe they are the what caused the ghost of Lady Comstock to be such a pain ??? ...)

Maybe not. Infinite BS used buzzwords many people have heard (and have been thrown around alot in fluff science 'shows' to be familiar), but really are too esoteric to be explained and understood (and for how they are misused/abused in the game).

--- --- ---

Mary Poppins Physics :

Columbia should have been designed like a Giant Kite (and with a 50 mile long kite string )

A number of catchy musical tunes would be required of course... (dancing policemen and such...)

At the end, Flame out Comstock's Umbrella and send him to his Doom ...

Oops, that would require talent to pull off successfully.

--- --- ---

Disney Did It Better :

The first part of Infinite BS was alot like entering old Disneyland ... Mainstreet then you take a right to Tomorrowland, and all the 'behind the scenes' stuff. (AHA. Virtually cloning of those old fruit company posters was bad enough in BS1/BS2, but now ...) Actually alot of it did look and feel like Coney Island. (( And how that is supposed to accord with 'New Eden' makes me wonder about Ken Levine's warped thinking processes - that he might attribute such to 'other people' in those evil days in American 'history' ))

--- --- ---

Better Detailing of Assets Possible :

Many details in the Solo games had to be limited due to Render speed and memory capacity of the GPU cards that were decided as the median "Target Hardware" of the expected Players.

10 years later (and more for the time THIS MMORPG or any game like it) advancements will make for great improvements :

  • Now Players can make use of far faster SSD (solid state disc/drives) loading into memory (wait a while and the M.2 specs increase that another 4 fold)
  • Far more Graphics memory (and XP and its 4GB limit) and GPUs several generations further along.
  • More main Memory and CPUS with more Cores

--- --- ---

AS Einstein said in 1905 : "This is retarded !!!"  :

After he read Luteces Published Scientific Papers, and the proposals in it ...

He later laughed at "Columbia : The High City" where alot of people were fooled/deluded by a clever application of Ergot Extract (which was a natural form of LSD). Comstock should have followed that rule about "Don't Get High On Your Own Supply"

--- --- ---

Sci-Fi Ideas To Add :

Columbia is powered from some sideways (multiverse) universe (no not one about 'wine and whiney writer wannabees'), and the truth is then shown that they are killing everything in that other dimension and the people in it (and strangely it turns out to be *OUR* universe...) And then this team of scientists and soldiers go through a 'Tear' to put an end to it (taking a Nuke with them to take out 'the fiends on the other side'). Now THATS some original writing ...

--- --- ---

MMORPG Conveniences :

Realism for movement would be part of the game, but some things can be done to minimize wasting Player time. 'Get Around' the 'World' without much Player effort -- while Player is paying attention to other routine/mundane management/status stuff. Players don't have unlimited Play Time, so you prefer to have them where they want to be without excessive in-game delays.

  • Your Character moving to some location (prepositioned) while you are offline (using safe 'established' routes). Various routine locations would be premapped.
  • NPC 'Guides' that takes you to a place (not Teleporting, but traversing a 'routine' path to a place/location), while you can be busy issuing 'Team' orders/checking projects statuses, checking messages and bulletin boards/newspapers, etc...
  • A decent (and customizable) MAP system to facilitate all this (probably with movement logs also)
  • NPC 'Team' that carry out 'Projects' while you aren't Online (also fetch things, make preparations and meet at X for Missions). NPCs that move stuff (like loot) while you are "offline"
  • Have (Your and NPC) Equipment sets pre-designated (I wish they had this in the original X-Com), preset by the Player for (quick)'switching' roles, without alot of interface 'elbow grease' being required over and over (and over).

--- --- ---

Perception :

Halfway imaginative Plot : Like the Emerald City in Oz (which in L Frank Baum's original story the occupants all had to wear green glasses, the city not really being emerald colored) that Comstock would have put something in the water to have the inhabitants see his holy city be so grand, when it was really a shithole. Booker starts commenting about it, but gets his dose soon enough.

Of course, just like game magazine reviewers, there are those who 'Buy Into It' without any extra help except 'money changing hands'.

--- --- ---

Bad Things Just Happen ?  :

H G Wells published War Of The Worlds 1898 when Columbia was supposedly floating about. So they (the Infinite BS writers) should have taken the opportunity to 'name dropped' this kind of stuff into their fantasy story (they certainly tried to with everything else). Oops, all that Quantumz BS activity tipped the Martians off that there was fresh meat on Earth, *OR* a Tear allowed them to access the one thing they needed to make possible their conquest ... Thus The Luteces doomed the Human Race in yet another dimension ... (Too bad that 'dimensional "god" Elizabeth isn't omniscient (all seeing) enough to see the Luteces are the real cause of all these horrors, and seek revenge (or justice ?) on THEM ! )

--- --- ---

The Left Suitcase ...  :

I saw a article on a 'collectors' website where suitcases had been recently found, left by people who died in (the now long abandoned) insane asylums, where being examined/displayed.

Imagine what various 'Splicers' have in THEIR suitcases (we saw alot of these handy containers at various Splicer lair locations in the Solo games). Likewise various dufflebags, applecrates, ammo cases, coffeecake tins, etc...

So yet another Template (for the auto-generator system) with various themes to be created from a wide range of items (including rather interesting documents ...). With enough imagination/creativity, many a small vignettes might be made possible.

--- --- ---

Use of Cylinder-type Recordings Lasted into the 1920s :

Cylinder type machines (similar to the first Edison ones) had the advantage of being able to Record.

Infinite BS implies recording on a 'hand wave' disk-type mechanism, which though 'pretty', has serious complications/defects in any Real World universe (looked 'good' I suppose in some early game design meeting). In for a pound of BS, in for a ton ...

Those mechanisms making up those Infinite BS Vox-o-Phone audio diaries are in the Top Ten stupidest things seen in the game.

-

New Gear (for the 'Satire' Columbia Redo) - the Record Player HAT (it also shoots buzzsaw blades/poisoned disks)

--- --- ---

Mission Template

Escort Quest/Mission :

Make sure it doesn't appear like the things being 'escorted' seem to try to walk through every single hazard along the way on purpose (many MMORPG 'escort' missions seem to be like this).

Random encounters (on a detailed Sandbox world) should be most of the happenings (and makes it a bit different for each Player who does that task).

One main 'opposition' (enemy/roadblock) within the Mission is sufficient (particularly if the 'Fail' ratio is high and will make repeats tedious if you are hit by one-after-another 'FAILZ" on a long Mission path).

--- --- ---

High Res Cityscape Picture :

Lotsa nice names, even if some of them are only Semi-Canon

  • City Center
  • Tattoo
  • Soho
  • Silver Cocktail Bar
  • Clifton
  • Night Club Casino
  • Big Dipper
  • Cabaret
  • Paradiso Cafe
  • Radio Action
  • Elizabeth Music Hall
  • Coffee Bar
  • Restaurant
  • Cadillac Hotel
  • Finley
  • American Dream
  • Robertson's Tobaccoria
  • Theater
  • Aladdin
  • Fleet Hall
  • Cohen's Collection
  • Hotel
  • Casino Blackjack Roulette American Dice
  • Open Plasmids

Generally placed on buildings in the 'window' cityscape of a type we never got to be inside of (in-game we were in those sprawling irregular messes used for the 'levels')

-

Consider that because of the rate which light is absorbed over distance through water, that these signs had to be VERY bright to be seen from building just 100 feet away (so you wouldn't want to have a window near them unless you liked things blindingly bright). A good reason for the excessive building (and distances between them) sizing to be merely 'artists license' of game developers who haven't a clue about reality. Big signs outside seen by virtually nobody, versus ones that people walk right past ...

--- --- ---

Police File Reports From Old Rapture :

  • Recovered From Smuggler Craft - One Cartoonish Gold Plated "Pony" Statue/Figurine.
  • Youth Arrested for Breaking into Circus Of Values machine and modifying it to Use Vulgar Language to Its Customers
  • "Found guilt of performing an unnatural act with a Sea Slug" - Remanded for Psychiatric Evaluation (hmmm)
  • Known criminal found shot to death in Viaduct with sign saying "Robber" around neck
  • Loud Party, investigation released with warning suspects dressed in Rabbit suits

--- --- ---

"The Rapturer" magazine... Not quite "The New Yorker" with Rapture's somewhat limited talent, but a literary forum for the City (somewhat prestigious).

--- --- --

The Fink Music Gun Mk3 ' :

  • Sound can KILL !!! ("But, But I only had it set on "Stun" Sergeant ...")
  • With a cylinder sound option (heh, not some anachronistic record they shouldn't have used for those Vox-o-Phonez) to switch affects.
  • "LETS JEREMIAH HIS ASS !!!"
  • Weird sounding sounds for easy to vary Assets (stay away from copyrighted sounds though).
  • "Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, DIE !!!!!"

We can have this in the MMORPG Fantasy corner (deranged Splicers have such very weird dreams)

--- --- ---

Moronic Celebrities Which Many Ocean Clams have Higher IQs Than :

Rapture would also have them just as they exist throughout the World and history. (You COULD buy your way into Rapture, and various Heirs often don't have the skills to build the fortunes they inherited)

Sander Cohen at least once in his career had enough talent to get paid sufficiently to afford building the Fleet Hall Theater on coming to Rapture (much of the rest of Fort Frolic funded by investors ...).

(I suppose if Cohen had royalties paid for his previous 'Surface' works, he somehow might continued to collect (or did he sell off The Rights ...) and have it converted and sent to him (even after 1952 critical materials and other things still were being (bought and) sent to Rapture via Ryan's Surface organization. AND some immigrants property assets might take many years to finally sell-off).

Many 'celebrities' in the Real World barely made a living (or not for very long) so might retain 'notice' (being 'celegrated') even without much financial success.

Lots of "One Shot Wonder" artists amongst the Amateurs ( Don't quit your Day Job... ) who never again have a 'Hit', though how they might become 'big' celebrities (other than with the cliche '15 minutes of fame) has more to do with the people dependent ON 'celebrities' - promoters, merchandisers, newspapers, critics, etc ...

--- --- ---

Consistent Makeup and Scaling of 'Terrain' and the Objects/Humans in Them :

Improvements :

  • All those out-the-window scenes will be real terrain and outsides of buildings which the player might traverse (within).
  • Shorter buildings (still can have 'towers' like many Art Deco buildings did). A few Tall ones amongst much shorter ones is the most logical.
  • Seeing activities out there - maintenance, transport, industrial work, tourism, vehicles, etc ...
  • Light dwindles very fast in water, so more 'murk' and only very bright lighting being seen for very far.

--- --- ---

RATS THE SIZE OF LARGE DOGS !!!!  :

Rumors and Missions ... (it was seen as wise to investigate these rumors by New Rapture's City Hall)

("Arts teh seiz fo glare Gods" ???) Misheard words from ADAM-addled brains of Splicers ?

"All them cats you saw" ... it was an advantage to have a kitty that kept vermin from nibbling on you while you sleep (and once in a while they provide dinner for YOU).

--- --- ---

What Do Art Deco Tunnels Look Like ?  :

The 'Suburb' expansion of Rapture was done with the less costly Plasma Tunneling technology (instead of the early above-seabed buildings). I suppose while the rock is molten (with use of Ryan Technology plasma cutters and such), moulds could be applied to offer some aesthetic 'texture' to the basic construction ...

A big element of Art deco was repeating patterns of CAST tiles/decorations added/fastened to the basic ordinary/plain structure. Highlights usually being applied at portals and entranceways, intersections.

--- --- ---

Those Weapon Upgrade Stations  :

This Upgrade Station idea filled-in/added a Game activity/goal roll, so its BS1/BS2 operation needs to be discounted a little when used for a more realistic MMORPG Rapture. Additional upgrades from those seen in the Solo games (perhaps some of the stranger/weirder ones were 'name only', and their effects were somewhat different -- who knows what promises people would 'swallow' when they were desperate - also what would 'Jack' know, was he supposed to be some expert on the subject ?).

Operates on a limited set of 'standard' weapons (and even then limited changes made with standard accessories). A real weapon upgrade station also cleans guns (including ultrasonic cleaner while-u-wait).

Seriously -- a 'magnetized' drill that deflects bullets, when simple lead bullets aren't magnetic ... (and BTW a magnet PULLS steel/iron TOWARDS itself ???)

Really those Stations shouldn't have limited you to one upgrade in their general use (and should have cost you money), but for BS1/BS2 purposes, being a desirable to search-out/find level goal was an added exploration aspect. The MMORPG would have a much wider upgrade system so any such stations are only basic (assuming they aren't broken/destroyed/looted and have any of the accessory parts left in them.

Fontaine built them ? Why? Would he want the majority of Rapture armed against him ? (One of the stupidities of the game is that the writers assumed most Citizens would be against Ryan>) Fontaine/Atlas could still arm/upgrade his minions without needing these publicly-accessible machines. So again its a 'game' feature that might be a bit differently handled in the MMORPG.

--- --- ---

Flying Bicycles for Columbia :

Some Steampunk fan did a 3D artwork version of something (a anachronistic streamlined 30s bike with Songbird-like type wings).

Bicycles were just becoming big around the Turn of the Century. Makes far more sense then that Skyline stuff (certainly as they did it in the game). Chase scenes, mounted weapons/accessories, sweeping maneuvers being possible, far more than with that 'Skyline'. Unfortunately, unrestricted movement is a No-No in a "Player to be led by the nose like a Steer" type shooter game (so as with having other realistic vehicles in the Game Engine, it would take more complicated scripting/programming to do right). The MMORPG would be designed to support such features.

--- --- ---

3D-Printing Integrated in Games :

3D Printing of small 3 dimensional objects is a new and developing technology, which no doubt will be used for many things in the future. Right now the printing machines and processes are still far too slow and problem-ridden for use in an automatic commercial application (like in your big-box store or supermarket or gamestore). They are also now costly to operate, but that will come down as suppliers multiply with the market. In the future, the machines will improve significantly and become a resource for computer games. This MMORPG game's features are not likely to happen too soon, so that gives a chance for 3D printing to become more prevalent and improved, and cheaper. ((the Technology is really still in its infancy.))

'Printable' Puzzle pieces that you print out, accumulate and manually manipulate to solve in-game puzzles. 3D pieces are much easier to 'juggle' in your own hand.

A Feature like this would Not be Required for play, but serve as an extension.

Pieces of furniture for a diorama of you personal in-game house/shop/office (plus floors, walls, etc...) Figures of you character in amusing poses, etc.. Trophies from various missions (adaptable for charm bracelets, I suppose.)

For these 3D Printable Object Assets, more data is required than just the games rendering data. There also is 3D printing Data for the Object, which is the scripting needed to run the 3D process (which is quite a bit more, as it has to do with real structural properties and idiosyncrasies of the machine and materials used. Ex- the object has to be supported/propped up with printed supports/tabs/rods WHILE it is being printed - thats required in the current machine process).

Coloring the 3D printed objects right now is a big problem, but no doubt they will have more solutions found for it as the technology's use increases.

--- --- ---

Absinthe A Symbol or Simply An Appropriate Prop ?  :

Wormwood (a key ingedient of this liquor) was something that naturally helped rid your system of PARASITES (worms), but like most medicines in excess can be poisonous. Because of its hallucinogenic effects, it became a favored liquor in the turn of the century Paris scene (Toulouse Lautrec ...), drunk specifically for THAT effect. Excessive use lead to insanity (it being high proof alcohol probably likewise helped).

--- --- ---

Opportunity MISSED KEN !!!  :

Comstock in the Final Confrontation - his mask falls off, revealing what is virtually a Skeletal face (having further deteriorated from his Tear activity 'aging' ...)

The wages of evil (with some creepy "I knew you would come" strangeness just before his death...)

Now why here couldn't we have some of that lovely brutal violence they slaved over providing earlier in the game - Booker bludgeoning Comstock in bone-crunching realistic fashion, and Elizabeth putting her high heeled foot grinding into the mess left of Comstock face  ???? Take THAT Daddy Dearest !!!!

Oh thats right, its about "Redemption" --- Then what the Hell was all the rest of the gratuitous violence in the game about ??? Oh, Was it just part of 1900s American there Ken ? BS.

--- --- ---

"Wired a Photo" (Wirephoto) - Picture Transmission over Telephone Line  :

Scanning and Sending of a paper image using audio amplitude over a (early on was usually a dedicated ) phone line (or via radio), copying a drum-rotated paper image to a matching receiving machine, both using a fixed size drum rotating at the same speed.

This was able to be done in the 20s (and earlier), but better in the 30s. Mostly used by newspapers to send pictures, but was in used by police agencies as well.

wtf this got to do with Rapture ??? (Where there's little point because of the short distances)

Pictures were sent halfway around the World by telegraph with a similar mechanism in 1899 (So Columbia can get in on some of this technological goodness -- and not a quantum was in sight for this ...)

Maybe its Stuff Ryan's Organization (on the Surface) keep sending to Rapture by Radio about World Events or "People of Interest" (troublemakers who MIGHT have has hidden their past) ... Encrypted so isn't obvious what its about, or who its to. In the MMORPG, maybe you find an abandoned Room full of years of the sendings (No it DIDNT keep going with nobody there - this isn't Pixie-Dust-Land here in Rapture).

--- --- ---

NPC Team page

Group Dynamics Within the Players NPC 'Team'  :

Different Team members may offer (make available) different strategies and tactics (besides any specialty abilities they have). You have different 'mixes' of NPCs selected for different Missions (theres a limitation ramp of how many you can manage at once). More complex/challenging Missions can take more personnel.

Different tasks - they are also used not just for Missions, but also routine things like Fabrication (crafting) and manufacturing, Shop/Sales/Clearinghouse operations, Information gathering and research, Residence construction/improvements, Transporting Loot, Security, etc ...

They would have personality to set them apart, and develop alongside your Avatar. You invest in them like you would upgrades to any game tool (They enable and increase success for certain Mission types). There would be significant involvement between the Player and these NPCs. You are expected to help injured members of your NPC "Team", and failing to do so many cause the others to leave your employment (seriously, if you can't help your employees survive, what kind of employer are you ?).

Automatic behaviors - NPCs will 'spot' things of interest and alert you to them, or defend you (and themselves) during an attack (without being prompted or micro-managed). It Won't be the "Hey Booker here catch!!!" or "Oh, I Can Pick This Lock!!!" lameness ( SERIOUSLY, THAT was touted as some new achievement in AI ???? )

SO a "Mind of their Own" to some extent (there are some very talented behavior AI programmers out there who might like a challange). Having consistency is a problem here - if you have one NPC who is very well done (versatile and interactively useful), and others that are blatant lifeless robots it will be pretty obvious. The Template system would help some, but it would still be a big project in itself to get it done well.

-

You might have 'Temporary' Team NPCs which would allow well tailored *special* interactions -- like having a 'Comedy Relief' character who goes through their set of (situation appropriate) Antics and odd/unique activities, but then who would otherwise get quite tiresome with even a little repetition and hence them being Temporary/transitory NPC characters.

There would also be Hirelings/Contractors for special tasks (kept longer than add-on NPCs you get within Missions), but when once done/served their purpose can leave. You would develop a number of 'useful' NPC people who you can call on for their special abilities.
