In BS1 Dr Tenenbaum has you 'Save' Little Sisters ( or you decide not to ). ( Versus Harvest Them ? ) How exactly does that process work ?? Does it KILL the Sea Slug within their body ? It also seems to suddenly have them lose alot of their Gatherer State and Mental Conditionings. We should understand that expediency for the game play is needed, and it must be simplified to a 6 second long animation sequence. ) ( The MMORPG and REDOs might have a more detailed/longer process be shown . )

An Iconic Element of BioShock Rapture


An image used by Ryan for Marketing Gatherer's Garden Machines -- To get Splicers to USE his Gatherer's Garden machines to be fed controlled/untainted ADAM products, and various insanity suppressing substances, and eventually a modification (Tonic) to allow the "Pheromone Control" mechanism to work. ( OR Even some "Cure" which would be developed. )

Little Sisters were Conditioned to 'Suck body fluids out of corpses' to feed residual ADAM components to an Embedded Sea Slug ( placed by Fontaine in the children initially to generate ADAM in a symbiotic interaction ) to further recover and reconstitute additional ADAM.

High fatality rates when they first wandered the halls required them to be guarded by 'Protectors' - Alphas, of the failed first project, and later by 'Big Daddies' who were sufficiently successful in lowering loss rates.

How many Little Sisters are there ? We were only in a small part of Rapture, thus only saw a small fraction of their Numbers ... Tenenbaums Safehouse in BS1 had quite a few of them, and they weren't the ones I ate in that game playthrough ( I saw them all there even with an "All Harvest" playthru I did ). To keep Rapture's (Ryan's) ADAM Addicts supplied ( and semi-sane ) there would have to be 'more than a few' active in Rapture ( even if they weren't all out wandering the streets ).

Having Regenerative Corpses [1] would have facilitated this when the supply of 'Fresh' Corpses dwindled.

"Bonding" might have been the LEAST of the problems making this all work ( Assume that "Gathering' was achieved first before the 'Protector' thing was even developed. )

Little Sisters Generate ADAM without having to 'Drink Blood/take ADAM from Corpses ( 20-30 times faster than a Sea Slug by Itself ) :

  • What reason then to risk them by sending them out to 'Harvest Corpses' ??
  • If they can gather alot more from Corpses, then it is a gain.
  • If they run out of new bodies ( with ADAM in them ), then there is no gain ( and possibly more loss of the Little Sister ).
  • Splicers who had taken many Plasmids would have a significant amount of ADAM ( which was generated originally without the 'ghoul act' ).
  • ADAM got scarcer in Rapture and the population got lower, it resulted in fewer new bodies.

Little Sisters Go "Sleep It Off" After Guzzling Retrieved Body Fluids (From a Corpse) :

So does the Sea Slug inside absorb the 'active ingredients', so that ADAM can eventually be harvested ( maybe via electroshock ?? )

The LS do get 'tired' quite rapidly - maybe the Sea Slug is absorbing metabolic energy from them when the digestion/absorbtion is under way ?

We don't know what happens to the Little Sister after she disappears into the vent, but being so tired it is unlikely they crawl very far.

Perhaps they are infrequently 'Harvested' ( the ADAM chemicals need not be very bulky to require constant collection ) and it may be after many days ? One would assume they are stable in the Slug.

Do they (LS) do repeated collections (and guzzlings) from the same Corpse over a period of time ? Wouldn't it be nice (and convenient) if the Big Daddy moved those 'ripe' corpses closer to the vent ( maybe the Little Sisters can ask ... ) to make it easier ??

BTW - Like any normal animal, a Sea Slug would need nutrition and oxygen to live. So are they 'wired into' the Little Sisters blood stream to be supplied with those crucial resources ?

The MMORPG no doubt will delve into these mysteries ( Some might be TMI ).

Missions, of course, will be made ...

Burping/Vomitting up ADAM constantly. Good Idea to have some Little Sister Breath Mints ( good thing Daddies are in those Diving Suits )

We WILL finally know how Raw ADAM is recovered from Little Sisters ( If it is a condition Pavlovian response[2], then the 'Bell' best be something not heard elsewhere in Rapture ).

Idea : The MMORPG Game May Have an UNSAVORY Filter to accommodate 'Sensitive' Players ...

Little Sister Comes Running :

If you pickup and move the corpse of a Big Daddy with a un-processed LS with it, the LS will move to be near the BD. No real utility (for you), BUT just something to play with. IT Might have been logical to have some other non-escorting BD or some ADAM-hungry Splicer come by ( in the game ) and try to pickup/grab the orphaned LS ( instead of just standing around forever ).

Little Sisters Blamed On Ryan ? - TO THE CONTRARY :

Contrary to the given anecdotal evidence and the intended vilification of Ryan upon the Players - It was NOT clear that Ryan's men were doing the Little Sister child kidnappings. A large number of earlier Little Sisters were 'Orphans' from Fontaine's orphanages, and had previously been slug-implanted for Fontaine's Raw ADAM Generation ( If parents put them there, having their daughters turned into glowy-eyed slug-symbionts probably wasn't mentioned to them ... ).

Those Little Sisters were ALREADY existing when Ryan 'nationalized' Fontaine Futuristics, and there must have been many of them. Soon, the confusion of a 'civil war' Emergency and ADAM shortage would have confused things even more.

How many 'new' Little Sisters were created (?) is not really mentioned ( just some vague incidents of 'kidnappings' ). Other competing ADAM-producing operations may not have had the scruples that Ryan would have had. How many of the 'kidnappings' could be attributed to THEM also is not known. Ryan Industries may have bought raw ADAM from independent operators, but then they may always have done so. Stories about many small 'ADAM Farms' spread out across Rapture may be something for the MMORPG to elaborate upon.

Imagine the crunching noise as this is inserted into a corpse's eye socket and breaks bone to get to that sweet sweet "Angel Blood" ... Exactly what was done to Little Sisters to condition them to do activities like this ??? ( We saw some Little Sister conditioning facilities in "Little Wonders" in Point Prometheus. )

We find more than a few of these ( in BS2 ). How the Little Sisters got them thru The Vents is not explained. Perhaps there were local 'Stations' where the Little Sisters were 'accommodated' - sanitary-facilities/'notions'/safe food and drink/laundry-service, and possibly ADAM Collection.

The Little Sisters seem to posses various toys and dodads ( some shown in this picture ).

Were Roaming Little Sisters All That Practical ? :

Of Course it was Needed for the Solo Games ... ( That Choice thing ... )

The 'Protectors' predecessor (Maintenance Cyborgs) were being produced/tested before the 'civil war' (terrorist rebellion) really got going. BUT Were there that many (Splicer) corpses lying about to make it worth risking Little Sisters ( who supposedly had walked around 'recycling' even before Big Daddies existed ) who can create new ADAM sitting home safe ?? Was the amount of ADAM produced from so few corpses that much more to warrant the risk ? ( Taking into account the original STORY of the attrition of Little Sisters/Sea-Slugs being killed. and later whole expense of creating their BD bodyguards ??? )

Systematic MANUAL corpse disposal ( removing them from the city streets in more 'normal' times ) couldn't have been a bad thing. Transporting the corpses to Safe Places where the Little Sisters could "recycle them" might have been much more logical/practical ( the Pickup-Men wouldn't be subject to ADAM-hungry Splicers AND could be heavily armed ). Thinking of it that way, the roaming LS + BD system sounds a bit Contrived ( Heh, they were originally some kind of disgusting insectoid thing doing a similar function ). Perhaps some of the unmentioned City Factions did their ADAM production this safer ( more practical ? ) way, especially if they could not procure sufficient Big Daddies or many new Little Sisters.

Again, Imagine "Little Sisters" being some ugly organism ( as imagined early in BioShock's Sci-Fi development ... )

Apparently THAT was discarded, as it gave the Player little Choice incentive to 'Save' them ( Where did THAT Concept come from ? - That it was seen as a 'Good' Player Empathy Involvement ??? -- Rather than : " Crush the Bug, Drink its Essence, and Power Up !!!! AND GIMME MORE BUGS TO CRUSH AND DRINK THEIR BLOOOOOD !!!!!!! MORE POWER ... MORE POWER TO KILL !!!! ROWWRRRR !!! " )

I suppose they needed some 'simple' Concept ( without creating some imaginative-but-complicated game motivation ) of the Player 'Helping' something, to offset the horrible Mass-Slaughter the rest of the game FORCES the Player (YOU) to do ( They never did quite solve that ... or try very hard to avoid ).

Creepy Idea for BioShock : To have the Player retain Little Sister Corpses ( or just their heads ), to then 'Power Up' with ( Like the Splider Splicer 'Organs' ). You KNOW they considered it ... ( Likely would be discarded VERY early ). Those bright Blue and Red bar indicator HUD thingees and injector vials are much prettier ( Hmmm, DID they reused the Sister Head idea on the Remaining Little Sister indicator on the Map/Hint interface ?? ).

Something Not Mentioned/Pointed-Out ( By the Writers ) :

When Sofia Lamb has many Children kidnapped from The Surface by Big Sisters - THAT would be a rather uncontrolled situation, with complications. It would lead to accidental killing and maiming of Children - and of any Adults who would try to protect them from the 'Monsters'. Dead/maimed Adults and Children, and the fate of the kidnapped Children who were NOT suitable -- THAT IS all left out of the game's narrative. [3]

Then there is the problem of converting these stolen children into Little Sisters using processes no doubt clumsier than the earlier pre-BS1 times. That shelf of cremated remains seen in Persephone possibly is evidence of that.

What a Little Sister Does With That Syringe ( ***GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING*** ) :

Blood makes up 7 % of the human body weight and the average adult has 10 pints of blood.

16 oz/pint x 10 = 160 oz ( a 'gallon' is 128 oz and a gallon of water weighs 8.35 lb ) - So the question is how many times its own weight per day does a Little Sister drink in blood  ?? Average weight of 7 year old is ~50 lb.

Do they have an anti-coagulant they inject into the corpse to 'loosen' up the ADAM-laced-blood for extraction ? ( Exactly how fresh does the corpse have to be ? -- Yum, such enticing details here ... )

Do Little Sisters ignore corpses that you've turned into bloody hamburger ( and have bled out ) ??? Or do they lick the blood up off the ground like Flies ( Enquiring Minds Want to Know ... )

The Splicer's enlarged Adrenal Glands are particularly tasty to Little Sisters, so that is why you see them sticking their syringes into corpses heads and 'fishing around' so much ...

Hmmm. That's a whole nuther genre - "Horror Tales from the Rapture" ( Sorry, no real Vampire or Were-whatevers ... don't need them ).

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane ? :

(( Note - for the young folk, this was the title of a a 1962 movie starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford about a pair of sisters one of whom was a child star. I don't think they have done a remake of it yet with Will Smith ( yet ... ) ))

Anyway, for 'one of those' odd ideas -- Showing the creative potential of this MMORPG mechanism even if it is mostly to produce groans ...  :

What does happen to all the 'old' Little Sisters ? Eleanor - an early operational Little Sister, was about 17 by BS2, and the MMORPG's timeframe is just a few years later. Possibly not all the Slug Implanted orphans became Little Sisters, and not all surviving Little Sisters became Big Sisters.

SO what happened to the rest ?? Sold on to Daniels Wales and other such operations ?? The Seedier side of Sofia Lamb's little 'Family' might be quite shocking. Think of the fate of a 'dried up' LS having its 'Slug' Recycled into a new Little Sister ...

( BTW - How many of Fontaine's 'orphans' were not usable ( just didn't work out ), and what happened to them ? That's another potential story for the MMORPG to explore ... With Sofia Lamb's 'less caring' (more tyrannical) ways, were her 'conversions' done with less finesse and a higher mortality rate ??? Might you find some Shocking room off Fontaine_Futuristics containing countless children's corpses/skeletons ... There WERE ALL those crematoria ash canisters stored in Persephone Medical Wing ... Let's not forget the original Lamb-Ordered Surface kidnappings ( see "Something In The Sea" ), which might NOT have always 'gone as planned' ... Where are the Newspaper cutout articles on the likely botched abductions and 'murders', where 'the red glow' was seen in the Sea ???? ) (( Yeah, The writers 'sorta' avoided that kind of thing, didn't they ... ))

Did we just 'not hear' so many detractors of Sofia Lamb because they just weren't making any new Accu-Vox machines any more ?? Or was it because anyone who even whispered against 'The Beloved Leader' was immediately 'Sacrificed' at "The Utopian Altar" ?? (( BS2 could have been a far bigger 'horror story' than BS1 was. ))

IT Would have been interesting to hear things others said about her -- They could at least scrawled it on the walls ( in obscure places ) the same way Lamb's supporters 'plastered' their Worship of her around.

So, That Little Sister Syringe ... :

They shove that needle into some organs ( why else so long a needle ) ? And then the trigger pumps fluid out of the corpse ?

Isn't the ADAM in the corpse's Blood ( or would that be concentrated in the tissue which is modified ?? ) OR is it a substance that freely circulates in the blood that makes the Stem Cells form to be rebuilt by the Plasmids ( genetic patterns introduced into the human, which influences certain tissues in certain body locations ) ? Has to be a recent ADAM user ( because the stuff deteriorates - why you continue to need more ... ).

Blood - an average adult has 4-5 quarts - that's ALOT to chug down at one sitting ( that bottle thing on the 'syringe' is alot less than a quart - so it all might take awhile at the rate we've seen Little Sisters do their business. )

I think in New Rapture, corpses will be taken to a designated blood draining area to facilitate the removal, so that the Little Sisters can do their work efficiently, and at their leisure, AND in full safety. Understand that Players are not Splicers (anymore), and Splicers out in the uncivilized parts of Rapture are "To Be Saved", and not killed.

So these corpses will probably be long dead (how appetizing) but still relatively intact -- If they are shown to exist after so many ears ( in BS2 ) then why not a bit longer to be there in the MMORPG ?? Add cleanup of all the ones Sofia Lamb had murdered in the recent history ... ) Hmmm, carting corpses back to the New City ( to collect a Bounty ) sounds like a fun Player activity, no ? ( Need to have a realistic gag reflex in the game to make it more interesting ).

A Frightening thing might be : some weird effect that the corpses, while keeping 'fresh' for so long , also still have a living conscious brain in them - paralyzed, incapable of action, but still capable of sensory input and Thought. ""Brigid Tenenbaum, what Living Hell did you create ???"" Tenenbaum would refer to them as 'strigoi' ( even though her LS child ghouls are closer to being that ) ...

NOW THAT IS GOOD WRITIN', KENNY BOY !!! ( I'm sure this all can be expanded upon for the MMORPG ... )

Little Sisters Not Quite so 'Cute' When You Hear Them Shouting "Kill It! Kill It!!"

Psychology of a Little Sister : Everything is Magic ... ( They are around the age when reasoning starts with things - like 'Causality' start developing in most children. Add to that, whatever delusional conditionings used to make the Little Sisters not care so much about shoving in a sharp device and drinking rancid blood from a corpse. )

It might 'not have been quite so endearing' IF the only viable ADAM 'Hosts' had been 75+ year old men or women.

Are Little Sisters addicted to ADAM ? - Do they get an ADAM 'rush' from their Vampire-like harvesting ?? ( Are they conditioned into this ?? OR it is a reinforcement feedback within their conditioning ? ) Seeing them with a twisted grin on their faces after slurping down an "Angel's" blood is a bit creepy.

Do they hear a constant tiny voice in their heads "Slinky Twinkey wants Drinky Drinky ..."

Psycho-babble .. etc, etc, etc ... Rote learned little sayings/recitations ( "All good girls gather" )

Behavior Conditioning IS A Complicated Process (LS/DB/etc) :

Little Sisters might have their 'Slug Fairy', which brings them toys "If They Are Good" -- Part of a rewards system to manage Little Sisters ... ( It is seriously 'icky' How the ADAM would be obtained from them ... And you THOUGHT sucking fluids out of rotting corpses was bad ... ).

The Secret is to USE as much of the child's natural inclinations, which ALREADY exist in the subject children -- Instead of building the behaviors all from scratch. Still this process is NOT making Nuts & Bolts and often requires skilled adjustments and application of different strategies to produce what is needed.

( Sad that those toys seen in Sinclair's Ryan Amusements Gift Shop were so lame. But then : Have you actually bothered to look at the lame stuff EVERY giftshop in the World sells ???? )

The fate of those children for which the 'Conditioning' failed - that is not nice to consider.

MMORPG Little Sisters ( Yes, There Will STILL be Them Walking About the City ) More Interactions :

Splicers would actually kidnap them if left unprotected - More valuable alive generally ( vomiting up ADAM in small quantities all the time ... ) "Ooooh Mr Bubbles, I did Burpsies again. Can we go home now ??"

How exactly do you extract it from them without killing them ?? Need some 'devices' that accomplish it, preferably without any graphic/unseemly details ( It has been done before ). 'The Little Bucket ...'

Reaction to them just standing there alone in the Solo game - any Splicer with two brain cells left will understand the value and advantage of having their own ADAM source. ( Wars between Splicer Factions constantly happen over that critical resource ). The MMORPG Players NOW prefer not to kill the Big Daddies ( there's a potential for a 'cure' for them also ).

The 'New City' has a Pamphlet (for Adventurers) titled : "Recommended handling of the Little Sister"

(( Heh, almost sounds like a playbook for the wannabee child-molesters, so needs to be handled in-game carefully to avoid troublesome details -- probably you need to recruit some Big Daddies/Big Sisters to manage the dicey parts - off screen. ** various factions did managed this somehow. There will probably be Player Missions to ascertain better methods -- ADAM production IS still part of "the Cure" process, so it will be a critical resource for the foreseeable future )).

Large Bounty to be paid for RESCUING Little Sisters - Tenenbaum is still on her Crusade for her personal redemption ( Imagine - what Rapture might have been without ADAM ever being found ??? )

Looking at some of the many online Cosplay postings - Showing multiple people being Little Sisters, a funny scene came to mind : Of two Little Sisters 'fighting' over a corpse - "NO! NO!! Its MY ADAM!!!!", "DADDY!!!! Shes taking MY ADAM!!!", "I'm gonna TELL Big Sister On You!!!!", etc ...

ACTUALLY, WHY "Gather" At All  :

Unless it significantly multiplied the produced raw-ADAM, to make it worth all that trouble ??? The extra 'Yield' of 'Gathering' beyond the original 10-30 X Slughost-thing of the basic symbiotic hosting was never elaborated upon. It would HAVE to have substantially more being produced to justify the complex Gatherer + Protector project and all ongoing costs. And consider THAT could only go on as long as there were sufficient fresh corpses to SUPPLY any ADAM.

***A New Revelation*** ( brought to you by the MMORPG ) : Corpses continue to generate MORE ADAM components ( It is not ADAM, just stuff the Sea Slug can absorb better to PRODUCE more ADAM ) - repeated Little Sister visits continued to yield MORE TASTY 'Angel Juice' for the Little Sisters to process.

THAT WOULD explain WHY so many corpse just lay there for years ( though not why they haven't been moved to a more convenient location over time ).

Horrific IDEA : The dead Splicers AREN'T QUITE DEAD, and they lay there in a Nightmare State ( Now THAT'S good story telling !!! ) No doubt there will be some Faction Cult of "The Living Dead" in the MMORPG.

WHEN No Tasty Corpses, No Little Sister Visits :

Little Sisters don't come to New Rapture (within city limits) mostly because there are no (few) corpses to Harvest.

'Dead' people are hustled off to the Clinic to be regenerated, though it is nowhere near as fast as the Vita-Chamber allegedly were to be. The 'dying' process in the MMORPG will be extended for Players and NPCs ( including Splicers ) to give more chances to 'intervene', and to make it all LESS of a 'shooting gallery' game.

Big Daddies still show up to do maintenance, but less often as the Citizens have taken a more active hand in repairs.

Of course, the Central Little Sister Base IS in New Rapture now.

Symbology of the Little Sisters Vents :

Sun symbol, Plant vines ... Life. Pretty. ( Not sure why they extend to the ground for their original function, or how much it would cost to change all of them ).

Air circulation through Rapture - the air has to travel both directions -- the out-flowing vents would probably be 'heated air' ( and be connected to the Oxygen renewal systems ) and the in-flowing 'spent' return vents would go to the places that the 'CO2' in it was used by plants ( or exhausted to the surface in the very early days ).

The 'Vents' predated those 'Little Sister' ADAM recycling ghouls walking about Rapture. They were first part of the air circulation system -- thus the idea LS can move through them to return to wherever they have their ADAM extracted -- though how exactly that is done ( the traveling AND the extraction ) I will have to get VERY creative to explain .

The Vents in the Burial At Sea DLC showed a grating over the opening ( useful to keep people from throwing garbage into them, as would their elevated opening position ).

Splicers Try To DO What Little Sisters Do - Drink Blood - YUMMMM!!! :

But it doesn't work. They don't have that Sea Slug within them.

Sea Slugs recombine/recycle the broken down ADAM elements/components in the blood ( as part of their natural process of digestion/venom - the origination of the whole mechanism - why it would possibly exist ).

The components are not enzymes/catalysts and get used up.

Opens up the whole 'Vampire' type idea ...

Safer than the old locations. Many Corpses are now delivered, so the Little Sisters don't have to go out to 'gather' in the unsafe parts of the City. Oh good - players get to cart corpse Back to New Rapture ( "Eh- its a living" as Bugs Bunny would say ).

You will still hear Public Announcements warning to not interfere with Little Sister activities or with Big Daddies.

You would want to use most of them again ( save alot of money producing for the MMORPG game ... )

Of course adding additional voice statements might be a problem (or not) if you want to mimic that previous voice. Voice Acting by some talented Players might create NEW Phrases ( good ideas would be ones designed to be re-combined in many ways ).

What would be all the new contexts which new voice assets would be required for ? Reactions to what??

Salty's Chips - 8oz :

8 oz of Potato Chips (with Sea Salt !!) - They were giving these to Lil Sisters as part of their conditioning ( Jelly Beans might have been better -- have to get Lil Sisters conditioned to brush their teeth also ?? Hmm, or those heal automatically ... )

We did not see any little buckets for the inevitable results of 7 year-olds gobbling down multiple bags of Salty's Chips. Soda bottles, that would have been even more fun. On the other hand, the typical adult has 5-6 QUARTS of blood in their bodies and these little ghouls supposedly drink THAT at one 'sitting' ???

Long ago (in Real Life) when they sold you a bag/box/bottle of something, they didn't try to fill it full of air or leave the box half empty to pretend that it was more than it really was ( or rather what a container that size SHOULD contain ). One of those huge (sized) bags you pay ridiculous prices today for has little more than 8 oz in it. You get a potato chip bag with a sandwich these days and it has 1/2 oz contents !!! Someday soon you will get a single chip in that ridiculous bag ( and maybe consumers will soon be stupid enough to buy empty bags ).

Little Sisters Predated the Big Daddies (Protectors) :

Fontaine's Child Slug Hosts were around quite a while before the Kashmir Incident and the need for ADAM to build Ryan's army to fight Atlas's murderous hordes.

The 'Orphanages' supplied Fontaine with the children to implant the Sea_Slugs in so - used to provide many times as much ADAM ( 20 to 30 times ) as the Sea Slugs by themselves produced. Fontaine used the ADAM to build his Plasmid technology company and then his Splicer army.

Later, extra ADAM from Splicer corpses was found to be collectible. And as the chaos/disturbances done by the Splicers accelerated and vulnerable Little Sister Collectors were put out in the streets, this precipitating the need for the Big Daddies to protect them. The additional amounts of ADAM they collected this hazardous way must have been far greater than simply 'farming' LS in well controlled 'Safe' environments.

An alternate process of Systematically collecting and bringing Splicer bodies to Well-Protected Little Sisters would not have resulted in quite the same game ( Plot overrules Logic and Reason ). The Pneumo was unfortunately a bit small to use for this purpose. Corpse Collecting Stations ( 'Deposit' machines with a Cash payout ? ) might have been an interesting addition to Rapture's landscape.

Consider that the Little Sisters public gorging on Splicer blood, likely left large amounts of ADAM in the Splicers body unrecovered. How much more efficient if the bodies were processes systematically, and were 'flushed out' with simple procedures, how much of that wasted ADAM could have been collected. Don't think I'm dwelling so much on this subject - I wasn't the one who came up with this whacky 'walkabout' idea for a game plot element/situation. (( Heh, think of the odd/long 'discussions' the Developers must've had over this issue/subject )).

Sofia Lamb's New Little Sisters :

Kidnapping new Little Sister children from The Surface seems a bit risky ( along with it being done by Big Sisters, who likely aren't that easy to control precisely ). Were people still dying in Rapture at the old rate to make it worth it to employ LS to harvest corpses ? This might be an indicator of ongoing Faction Wars in Rapture ( where Sofia Lamb really only controlled a fraction of the City ) ? Of course, Sofia Lamb may also simply be systematically killing off her 'followers' to satisfy the supply/need, and the Little Sisters are needed to facilitate that collection.

Little Sisters sitting home ( no Corpses required ) also can produce ADAM 20 - 30 X faster than just stand-alone Sea_Slugs - THAT might just be the steady ADAM source for Sofia Lambs 'project'. But then, why all the new Big Daddies and Little Sisters we see wandering everywhere with their Protectors ?

Required for Collecting Memories to work Sofia Lamb's Insane 'Utopian' Project ?

Lots of things need explaining, and only vagaries are presented in the Solo games. "The Diary of Sofia Lamb" (pages of it) might be one of those ongoing 'finder' Quests for Players in the MMORPG. Lots more Lore to fill in.

Little Sisters Grow UP :

The Little Sister gets older ( the age of magic ends around the age of 7 for children and they start to see reality more and figure things out ). Their implant and conditioning ( and constant re-conditioning ? ) may slow this down, but its obvious that it eventually becomes ineffective. The game (BS2) has them jump to Big Sisters who are teenagers ( and all that goes along with that state ) but the transition isn't explained, and what happened to the Big Daddy(s) ? The later BDs weren't linked to a particular Little Sister, but eventually there were few new Little Sisters remaining ( before Sofia Lamb started kidnapping them from the Surface ). The Daddies would still do the maintenance, but would they have any interactions with the Little Sisters as they transitioned.

New MMORPG 'Lore' could explain and illustrate all of that ( with alot of vetting of course by the Players/company to make it fit in properly ). There probably would be additional Little Sisters transitioning at the time of the MMORPG, which is set about 2 years after BS2 ( when Sofia had lots of Little Sisters roaming around - the new Surface Kidnappings supposedly started early in 1967 - that's from SitS detail, and there may have been earlier ones ).

(( Kidnapping from Surface - The writers avoided mentioning the fate of all the children in Rapture by that time - and the possibility that Sofia had 'used up' all the available children. Cremation ash cannisters were seen in Persephone ( failed conversions ? ) in the place where Audio Diaries about Little Sister conversion development were also found. ))

Another element would be what happens to the Big Sisters, who by the point of the MMORPG may be transitioning out of their 'teenager' mode. MMORPG Players imagination will likely find a solution.

Evil Lollipops - Sofia Lambs Little Sister Manipulations :

  • Little Sisters Don't Like Injections - "Bad baaaad needle thingees are baaad ..."
  • Lollipops to administer behavior modifying drugs ( employed also with many conditioning adjustment procedures )
  • Pretty toys with chemical emanations, pheromones, chemical triggers, whatnot.
  • Their Little Sleepy-Time beds with auto-suggestion audio tapes playing thru the night under their pillows ?
  • TV shows with subliminal messages ( reinforcing various conditionings ). 'My Little Pony' with hidden subliminals "I must collect Angels or the Pony will DIE !!!" ...
  • We never really get to see how ADAM is 'recovered' from the Little Sisters, but it no doubt requires some handling by Lamb's personnel ( Clowns are scary, so I don't think their delusional visions of these 'handlers' will look like clowns ... Big Teddy Bears ? ).
  • Feeding Time - LS have to eat more than 'Capt Salty's Chips' and 'Hop-Up Cola' ( Oh great, sugar 'wired' Little Sisters ... )
  • How to get them to eat their vegetables ?? Perhaps they get sufficient 'nutrition' when collecting 'Angels', but during a slow period they still need to get it from somewhere. Just another part of the conditioning ?? I suppose if you can get them to suck the fetid blood from ripe corpses, then getting them to eat broccoli isn't much of a problem.

New Rapture 'Trick' - Vita-Chamber, Little Sisters and Sea Slugs :

Some modified Vita-Chambers when used on Little Sisters increased subsequent ADAM production by as much as 100% ( vitalizing the Slug apparently ... ) for a brief period. Your mileage may vary.

How to get them (LS) to stay in the chamber for the a longish period -- 'Tea Party Time'. We never got much details about handlers for Little Sisters in their 'Homes', and how they were managed while they were not out hunting for 'Angels'. We saw that the LS were allowed to wander round in that special section of Outer Persephone ( when we saw things thru their eyes ). We never saw how the ADAM they produced was collected. Previous conditioning and simple child psychology likely was employed ( versus grabbing them, anesthetizing them with a cloth full of ether, and then shaking them by the feet upside down into a bucket - a training film (Player Created) would show THAT as 'How NOT to do it' ). One wonders how various Splicers who ' Run their own "stable" ' of Little Sisters manage to do it.

Little Sisters - Happy as Clams :

"Jim: You betcha ! Ryan Industries has seen to it that they're bred to be as happy as clams while they do the work that keeps us safe from the bandits and terrorists. We all need ADAM, and we all need the Little Sisters."

'bred' ? Like they are grown in vats ??

On the other hand, was the Little-Sister-Vision scenes we saw thru one of their eyes (in BS2) a product of improved conditioning ( They had to be conditions sufficiently to work with 'Daddies", and not just some simple potato-chip reward vs shock for picking the image of the BD system ). Imagine Fontaine's/Lamb's not particularly caring much how horrific a Little Sister's Experience was (as long as they weren't 'damaged' much ...), while Ryan at least might listen to recommendations to facilitate efficient ADAM production and prevent revulsion from the population. ( Ryan no doubt rejected one suggestion that had the LS dress up in little Clown outfits and possibly having giant fuzzy-bunny suits for BDs ).


Audio Diary - Yi Suchong - "Little Sisters and Corpses" : "Here is Suchong's problem. Little Ones are repulsed by the look and smell of corpses. Must find a way to make gathering task more... attractive, maybe if we program them to see bodies as something more appealing : kitty cats, chocolate bars, some other stupid thing these children enjoy." Imagine what the public reaction would be for Little Sisters to Look and Act far worse ( like Gollum or Carrot Top for instance ... ) Ghoulish little rhymes :

Fiendish : If Little Sisters drink the corpses blood to 'recover' the ADAM, then the ADAM isn't Stem-Cells ( which would be tissue in the corpse ) but rather something else ?? Now if they really needed to get the 'Stem Cells ... Actually ate the flesh - Mmm, sharp teeth and blood running down their chins as they gulp down gobblets of flesh torn from the dead body. Raw Liver, yum ...

Memories are in ADAM ??? And all that ADAM goes thru 7 year old children. That doesn't sound good.

Possession by Eleanor of Little Sisters :

This 'Possession' is important in the plot because THEY are the ones who do alot of the work to bring Delta back. But as per the Audio Diary Eleanors Linky she is still awake while this is happening which might allow her to have things brought to her ( assume she can figure out how to override the lock on the Quarantine Room... ), to talk to the Little Sisters, to more directly guide their various tasks ( and others like Tenenbaum/The Thinker who she can get some assistance/knowledge from. ) Even getting cooperation from some Big Daddies may have happened ( useful for dragging heavy Alpha Suits around ). The control-module for that Vita-Chamber might have been taken to her for all the 'fixing' work that was needed.

Remote mind control is a bit on the dodgy 'fantasy' side. SO lemme take a crack at it to Sci-Fi-ify it. 'Psi' powers, like disrupting someones mind ( in your immediate vicinity ) long enough to fake 'Teleport' is much simpler than 'controlling' another individual miles away and 'seeing through their eyes'.

We don't know what kind of changes Little Sisters ( or THESE Little Sisters and/or Eleanor ) have gotten. They may effectively have transmitter/receivers in their heads - some kind of biological radio ( if not just some regular radio they could actually carry ). Why not have a camera setup at the Vita-Chamber worksite at Adonis Spa, so Eleanor can see what is being done to guide the progress??

Some kind of mechanism/machines Eleanor could access could have been used to condition/reprogram/communicate with Big Daddies and Little Sisters brains which may have been expanded to include visual information or tying minds together. Who says the Vita-Chamber itself ( or its critical guts and the plans/information about how they worked ) weren't actually brought to Eleanor to work on, OR that much could be done reprogramming it remotely ?? Whatever it was, it must have been quite tedious for Eleanor to do all the things required to rebuild/modify that Vita-Chamber, and then resurrect Delta ( but then she did have lots of time ).

A similar effect was the way that Eleanor communicated with Delta. Freeing_Father implies she was awake upto the completion of the 'Delta Resurrection'. After that, the messages from Eleanor flow to Delta while she is supposedly unconscious -- or rather just paralyzed, as we don't know the effects of her being pumped full of ADAM really might be. Sofia's sedatives might not have been as effective as she thought.

BS2 - That "Cindy" You Can Kill/Save After Defeating 'Mark Meltzer' Alpha Daddy :

That might not have been Meltzer's Cindy ( any LS usually 'will do' for non-Alpha BDs, and DID you seriously ever expect Sofia Lamb to honor ANY promises she made ?? )

Or maybe THAT ONE was ... Perhaps they wanted to limit the Players personal involvement, about a child who now has a name and identity, rather than just being another nameless dehumanized Little Ghoul which we so easily decide the fate of. DO YOU kill her ( even with the green misty stuff, you really should realize what is supposed to take place when you 'Harvest' the LS ), or DO you 'Save' her into an as yet uncertain fate ( How many of those 'saved' LS actually made it back alive to Tenenbaum ?? or to The Surface World ? )

It is much simpler to avoid/ignore such issues, and just not happen to have a 'Cindy' named. The MMORPG would possibly have much more to say about such issues.

Another One of Those "How Exactly Did That Work ?" :

The Saved/Rescued Little Sisters in BS1 climb back into the Vent, but then where do they go ? Presumably Tenenbaum eventually gets them ( you supposedly see your 'Rescued' ones in the Safe House later ? IF you Harvested all then those are the ones Tenenbaum rescued herself ). We aren't even sure how they crawl so far inside there (miles maybe), or how ADAM is even extracted from them back wherever they go to.

So more things for the MMORPG to explain (and have Flashbacks and Mini_Game scenarios )

Being Regenerated Doesn't Mean Pretty  :

They mentioned in BS2 ( in an Audio Diary ) that Little Sisters regenerate, but that they don't necessarily regenerate perfectly ( X-ray of badly reformed/knitted bones in a broken leg, Audio-Diary of doctor mentioning the effect ... )

One point is that they (LS) are NOT indestructible ( as you and Splicers/Atlas's thuggers can 'Kill' them to get their tasty ADAM, or the Seaslug containing ADAM ). SO anything short of that is still possible with various affects which though quite quickly 'healed' might not be overly cosmetically pleasing or correctly formed.

So, with a surviving Little Sister who has had the odd accident or attack ( or clumsy Big Daddy ) in its past - the result might not be so 'cute' looking any longer.

In the game, to avoid the issue of harming children ( which would be very bad for the company commercially ), we basically got them to be 'invulnerable' ( except for some weird veiny glow effect ) -- And the 'Green Cloud' misted Harvest 'kill', with no remaining body ( with not even a lost bow-tie or little shoe remaining in evidence - usually just their body fluid extracting device laying there ).

The MMORPG will have to be pretty much the same -- the Players generally don't do that kind of thing any more (killing LS), and a 'live' Little Sister is FAR more valuable an item game-wise anyway.

Compulsion to Suck the blood from 'Angels' was a conditioning reinforced by ???? What inducement might be used on a child to get them to perform this gruesome task ( the conditioning can't always be perfect or mask the disgusting actions ... ) ?

Little Sister Despondant After "Daddy" Is Dead ...


"Harvesting" Little Sisters :

The Nazi's used 'euphemisms' too. SO in the game, the Player as "Jack" ( and later Delta/Sigma ) KILL a child ( Oh, but its not a child ?? Listen to them talk if you want a contrary evidence about that. ).

There is a problem with trying to impart 'Empathy' when the game's alternative is Killing.

Come to think of it, "Saving" them isn't exactly doing them a favor when their fate is unknown in a very nasty place ( you only have Tenenbaum's say so, and LOOK what listening to 'nice' Atlas got you ... ).

Third choice is to do nothing ( which loses the player all those ADAM "wonderful toys" - something that would reduce the game experience quite a bit ). AND You are FORCED to Harvest/Save at least once in BS1 ( If you wish to advance very far into it before quitting ).

In BS2 you have the chance to enslave a Little Sister for your own purposes -- BEFORE either killing them or leaving them to their fate (never pick on up) all alone ( or just let one ride around on you for the rest of the game ?? ).

I Robot, Little Sister :

As the so-called 'civil war' proceeded, there was greater demand for ADAM, and Ryan sought increased ADAM production. First - on Suchong's recommendation, most of the Little Sisters Ryan inherited from Fontaine were converted to "Gatherers". With their losses to Splicers, even after 'Protectors' were deployed, Ryan then ( as the BS2 plot says ) turned to McClendon Robotics to improve his ADAM supply problem by creating a batch of robotic Gatherers.

Unfortunately, the project did not succeed, as the Big Daddy Protectors ignored the too-mechanical robotic Gatherers. Any plans to arm the Robotic Little Sisters, to have them protect themselves, might have been underway when the Events of BS1 took place. A Project to breed large numbers of ADAM Sea_Slugs would have long since failed under Fontaine ( It would have been the simplest/cheapest/least-risk solution, but obviously wasn't done ).

Contrary to what was implied (but not stated) in the BS1 game, there is no proof Ryan kidnapped children to make NEW Sea Slug Symbionts -- That was originally the criminal work of Fontaine, and likely continued when he became Atlas ( to supply his terrorists with ADAM ). Even the Novel never says the kidnappings shown were at Ryan's orders/being condoned, and there is plenty of evidence of ADAM bootleggers and other parties producing ADAM in Rapture (signs in BS1). Why should Ryan pay/go to the trouble to make Protectors IF there was the easier solution of just kidnapping lots of children ?

Possibly "The Thinker" research was partially paid for by McClendon to make the Artificial Intelligence the Robotic Little Sisters would need to operate. Perhaps, if the writers hadn't contrived to kill him off, he would have been allowed to use his know-how and imagination to turn the Robots into Security Devices. Seriously, in BS2, they had the Robot Little Sister Asset made (minus the animations), and the context existing, to add another potential opponent/hacked-helper to the game. But Minerva's Den, being DLC, they likely were incapable/unwilling/insufficiently-funded to go to the extra effort. We can still expand upon that concept in the MMORPG.

We never DID hear exactly how much (more) ADAM was recovered from corpses ( it had to be sufficient to justify riskily sending the valuable Little Sisters out to get it, rather than having them sit Safe in some well-guarded place to then be generating 20 - 30 X what the normal Sea Slug generated ). Of course, when you run out of un-tapped corpses of ADAM-filled Splicers, then the whole GATHERING thing becomes rather pointless anyway.

For us, it was a case of the game Plot saying "It must be So", logic or no, to force this whole iconic "Little Ghoul" element of the game (( With that empathy Save/Harvest stuff mutated from a System Shock-like alien something-or-other )). I would think having men or Big Daddy 'COLLECTORS' ( rather than Protectors ) who drag all the corpses TO the Little Sisters in their WELL PROTECTED/SAFE places would have been a LOT less risky in managing such an important resource.

Such logic/practicality would completely change the Player's activity/interactions with the eventual ICONS of the game (( Apparently the first BioShock had to be completely rewritten/redesigned more than halfway through its development, likely making it a far poorer game than it might have been, because of all the wasted Effort and Time - something that was repeated 'In Spades' for Infinite BS )).

Robotic Little Sisters might have been used as the Vita-Chamber's "Corpse Gnome" Collectors ???

Dress them sufficiently different so it won't confuse the Big Daddies.

If they were 'smart' enough to ADAM-harvest corpses on the streets, then they could do this also ( actually is simpler ).

I can't wait to tell Atlas. He'll be so pleased..."

This one little girl, one set of genes. Even if all the others die, it will be enough to save the program from extinction."

"Now, one of the girls managed to dart past the nurse today and throw herself over the railing in the lobby. Not certain if she was trying to end her own life or ... or merely escape. But either way, her legs had healed by the time I managed to get down to the first floor where she lay. Now, without proper setting, the rapid healing process had fused her bones back together at odd angles. We had to re-break and set them almost a dozen times each due to the small window of viability. Now, those children may be immortal, but I can verify, they feel pain. Advising Doctor Lamb on higher doses of sedatives to keep this from happening again."

Little Sisters in Time grow up and become a problem (Teenagers). This is mentioned throughout the game as well as in There’s Something in the Sea.

  • Anuther type of 'Protector' which didn't quite work (?)
  • Robotic Teddy bear that Splicers did very strange/disgusting things with (ick)

"Save Little Sister" Plasmid :

[[Tenenbaum[[ gives Jack a Plasmid that 'saves' Little Sisters. That is a bit of a crap shoot, as Jack can simply 'harvest' them after that.

That Plasmid when used ( animation shows Jack putting his hand across her face/head ) perhaps introduces some venom or virus which kills the Sea_Slugs ( but doesn't harm humans ).

Perhaps there is a nest of 'sea leaches' in Jack's hand ( similar to 'beehive'/waspnest hand seen in "Insect Swarm" ) - a parasite that Tenenbaum found ( a natural enemy of those Sea Slugs maybe ).

Later, Tenenbaum may extract any remaining ADAM ( used for those 'rewards' you get slipped every '3 Little Sisters' you 'Save' ) out of the ex-Little Sister. Leaving something which likely is Sea Slug venom in a body ( a substance which reverts tissue to 'Stem Cell' form ) probably is NOT a good thing to have in the human body.

There seem to be alot of these tables in the Little Sister 'conditioning' section of Little Wonders ( in Point Prometheus ). Possibly it is implying that they 'went through' alot of children to produce the required number of Little Sisters. The facility seem to have existed BEFORE Ryan took over/inheritted Fontaine Futuristics ( We see a pile of old signs labeling the place as Fontaine's ). So THAT likely would be the original Sea Slug Implantation Process ( the LS would need to be proven 'Producers' before being sent to be warehoused/milked in the Orphanages - processed like the way milk cows are 'culled' ). The valuable Slugs would be 'recovered', and we know how much Fontaine 'cared about human life' as to what happened to the unfortunate children.

OR this could be one place Fontaines 'Slug Hosts' were held and the ADAM 'extracted' from them ( Seems too small for the number needed for it to be just THIS PLACE - Perhaps that process was developed and R & D was done to IMPROVE that process ... )

In Burial At Sea (DLC), Little Sisters rescued from Fontaine's abuse are seen publicly. Why they are there on Market Street in an Upscale area ? This would be mere months after they were rescued..

Publicly condemning the dead Fontaine's Crimes would justify 'the seizing' of Fontaine Futuristics so making reparations/restitution to all of Fontaine's victims might be done.

How The ADAM Extractor Worked :

That baby bottle has a one-way valve at its top, and the Lil Sis sucked on that nipple thing and made a vacuum in the bottle which then was used to draw out the body fluids.

Long Needle for probing into the 'best' bits, where the corpse's ADAM-rich fluids exist ( the tumors were particularly high in value ).

The valve handle/lever used to activate/work/pump the fluid vacuum extraction.

The one-way valve then allows ingestion of the fluids ( the trigger valve open so there's little resistance )

Consider that the Sea Slug shits into the child stomach ( Realisticness can be rather Icky ...)

Ryan took over managing the Little Sisters after The Rapture_City_Council 'Seized' all of the criminal/sociopath Fontaine's holdings. Discovered were the children being used as Slaves who had been implanted with the ADAM Sea_Slugs to produce ADAM which Fontaine had sold. It is not known how many of the original 'Orphans' were 'used up' in the experimentation that Fontaine paid Tenenbaum to do to develop the Slug Hosts for Fontaine's expanded ADAM production.

In Burial At Sea, these Rescued Childrens' lives were normalized, and they were mixed-in with the general populace. Their welfare became Ryan's duty - to see that they were sustained and educated. Until solutions could be found to cure them, and while Rapture still required the ADAM they produced, they were to be taken care of. Some good part of Fontaine's wealth/property would have been used to make reparations and to pay for the welfare of the Little Sisters.[6]

Unfortunately, in less than 4 months time, the terrorism started, and all plans were changed to handle the City Emergency.

Burial At Sea added a new facet to the story of the Little Sisters

Ryan inherited all the existing Little Sisters - all exposed after Fontaine's 'death'.

That was less than 4 months before the Chaos in Rapture started with the Kashmir Incident that New Year's Midnight.

Ryan provided for the children in somewhat better accommodations than Fontaine had provided. He still had to maintain the ADAM production while trying to find a solution to the Addiction Problem - interrupted by the City Emergency.
