REAL Submarines are quite complicated machines. Automating Rapture's Bathyspheres is out of the question unless they were Cable Driven routes ( point to point movement, and track guided within the stations ).

Zeppelin Autopilots ( supposedly with latitude/longitude inputs ) are similar fantasy twaddle.

Understanding Real Submarines


Look at the interior of a real WW2 Submarine ( There are a few around in museums you can actually tour the inside of ), and all what is PACKED into a Submarine. It becomes very much harder ( as in being ridiculously impossible ) for those 'Bathyspheres' to be true submarines ( capable of the significantly independent movement seen in the game ). The game mentioned 'Fishing Subs' ( which would be required to have significant distance capability while trawling ) would have to be much larger vehicles ( with far greater capabilities - and thus even more complexity ).

A decade of new technical development (in Rapture) isn't enough to fix this ( and it would have to be operational early in Raptures history ). Rapture's transit had to be viable from the start. (Some) Players might be comparing to today's variety of small high-tech submersible, which are the product or 70+ years of additional technological development ( BTW - even THOSE things require BIG complex Support Ships for their quite limited uses ).

BioShock Rapture is NOT Infinite BS's flakey-fantasy, so would be required to have some plausible explanations for what you see in-game. A Cable Driven Bathysphere system would be the answer to make the 'Bathyspheres' more workable.

The gamemakers could have given us more REAL looking 'Submarines', like those things seen in the 'Smugglers Hideout' which at least had half a chance of being plausible. Really, what would it have mattered to have a larger vehicle except for that snazzy round 'streamlined' Art Deco look someone envisioned in some early meeting. ( Note - "Form Over Function" is problematic when something actually has the requirement to FUNCTION. )

By changing those 'Bathyspheres' closer to what would be the equivalent of a Disneyland 'People Mover' Capsule (moving on a cable), we can preserve the original styled 'vision', but then have it be something workable ( and more viable even than realistic 'submarines', as something used for a reliable/routine/maintainable City "Transit System" ).

Real World Streamlining 1936


Italian 1936 streamlined electric train. The game designers of BioShock never quite 'got' the essence of Streamlining ( Something which started centuries ago for things which move through Water ).

They bizarrely overdecorated Raptures Trams and AE Trains into something that was not Art Deco, nor even the modern style of that time.

LA TROLLEYS


Multiple Trolley lines in downtown LA. Populations require sufficient transportation criss-crossing the city.

1/3 of the land area in urban areas is taken up by transportation ( think about it and you then can realize its quite true ). In this picture you have good wide streets, a tracked trolley system, lots of autos and parking for them, and' sidewalks.

Columbia has all that open space, but THAT is still unused for any transport ( just as neither is it for any real mass of buildings, residences, businesses ). In the game, you see those meager Columbia sidewalks and roads ( impaired by constant stairs and gaps ) ... WHERE do they actually get anyone to ??? They hardly do.

Barges ? Not as versatile as the common transportation actually used for everyday needs.

As one game commentator said about Infinite BS : The game's pretty Columbia was NOT a city, it was merely a prop for mediocre gunplay, and a rather confused and forced story.

PLANES TOO ??

Not this one - which is an American Clipper used to take rich passengers across the Pacific (and later the Atlantic) in the late 1930s ( then used as Naval Scout Planes in WW2 ) THESE require really smooth water to land/takeoff from. By the end of WW2, newer planes could match and exceed its range and operated on land airports.

A much smaller seaplane type might land near Rapture in smooth(er) ocean water during calm weather. They would fly from nearby airports to make priority deliveries.

Mostly Far Less Fantastical/Illogical ...

WHY DO I BOTHER ?

Because I WANT computer games to be better than what we typically get from the Game Industry, and perhaps by pointing out ClapTrap like BioShock Infinite, strong criticisms being voiced might serve to SHAME the makers of such substandard games, and MIGHT cause them to DO BETTER in Future.
