"There is something more powerful than each of us, a combination of our efforts, a Great Chain of industry that unites us." - Andrew Ryan

.

Andrew Ryan - an Immigrant and An American Success Story - who Left America when America was turning away from his Ideals and the World was threatened with Nuclear Destruction.

Ryan - Given A 'Bum Rap'[1]( By the game writers )  :

Andrew Ryan got Rapture built and ran it for over a decade, and also he had built an industrial empire starting from nothing previous. The City could not have been just 'thrown together'. Rapture would have had to be carefully planned and executed and cohesively run. To do all that, Ryan would not be ignorant of how things really worked within the modern world.

With the instability ADAM brought ( largely helped along by Fontaine, who intentionally sought to disrupt Rapture ), it was actually amazing that Ryan kept things running within his City under such attack. One wonders how long our own lives would last and things hold together, IF our outside World was subjected to such damaging disruption.

Of course, Ryan was made "the bad guy" when he was fighting to keep his City from destruction. What he was shown to have done was far short of what our 'democracy' did during WW2 in our own countries. The game developers are exploiting so many Players' ignorance of such things. They (most Players), have today, had lives so 'Easy and Safe' for so long, that somehow they think things would be somehow different if THEY were faced with such a threat. The people represented in the game came out of WW2 and the Great Depression - THEY would KNOW better. Unfortunately (and ignorantly) the game characters aren't really portrayed that way. The few inhabitants which you, in the story, are allowed to hear from ( and the Game's Developers obviously gave little clue about ) evidence of a lack of such previous traumatic experiences to shape their portrayed thinking and behavior.

It is probably not a coincidence that Andrew Ryan looks alot like Howard Hughes

Ryan and Rapture, Rapture and Ryan :

I don't accept Ryan being the one dimensional cutout 'villain' character they turn him into BECAUSE he would HAVE TO BE more than what they portray -- For him to have achieved what he did ( and what the people of Rapture would have also realistically done ). This can be realized when one knows and appreciates more about the Real World ( which this game allegedly was supposed to employ as a Foil against the Genetics 'Shock' aspect of the story ). It was sophomoric to have him be inconsistently portrayed in the game ( again a cohesive/logical story WAS NOT the priority when you are kludging together a shooter game - They were only a third of the way to showing us how interesting Rapture actually was - even just from its ruins ).

Rapture didn't fall because of Ryan, it fell because Society ( one close in similarly to our own ) fell apart because of the influence of a NEW element (the 'BIO' in BioShock). Rapture's society did not have the mechanisms to handle such a threat ( or rather had many real mechanisms being ignored by the writers to force their plot ).

The vagueness of much of the narrative ( It is like trying to reconstruct 'The Story' from splotches of French eye-tears and vomit on The Champs Elysees after the Nazi have taken Paris and marched through ) leaves ALOT open to interpretation and begs further "Reading Between the Lines". Unfortunately they had the alibi of a limited budget and no real need for good storytelling ( the primacy of the game's gunplay/killing activity trumps all ).

A Real Story : Ryan's Desperate Attempts To Keep His City From Dying :

Ryan had to 'Fight Fire with Fire', as his conventionally equipped security men could not always handle the Splicers inhuman abilities ( even with the heavy hardware he equipped them with ). Many of his Citizen supporters had taken Plasmids in desperation to counter the anarchists/terrorists. Ryan would make use of them before half the city was killed and the other half was starving to death - The disruptions were so severe. He was again and again told there was NO TIME to develop certain things he would rather have used. It is far easier to DISRUPT Society, than to Protect It from those set on destroying it. This is something the original gamewriters avoided mentioning.

The Pheromone Control scheme to try to nullify Atlas's Splicers was rushed into use ( and NOW needed by Ryan because his own spliced forces would eventually go down the same uncontrollable path to insanity ). The Pheromone Control's effect would not be like 'Would You Kindly', with those affected taking direct orders, but would be a general mood changer -- as in making the Splicers passive, so that disruptions would stop and Rapture's essentials for sustenance could be resumed.

Note that when Jack was there [2] things were still running, and noone but Splicers in sight. So who do you think was doing all the work (elsewhere) keeping everyone alive ??[3] Ryan would be the one people looked to for Survival. He was the one who had the ability to inspire people to hold on.

The IDEA of Rapture :

Andrew Ryan’s ideal for Rapture was a world in which the creative elite (and even the mediocre), unconstrained by social obligation, were free to pursue their own ends, to any extent that their effort awarded them, thus advancing society, who then follow along (and benefit by) using the best and most practical results. It is a process fraught with issues (people will be people), but with alot of the accumulated impairments of society being removed ( The ones existing 'upto that time' -- We have even more impairment NOW ).

Ryan (being practical) said that he expected those who came to Rapture to still require some adjustments - That many of the patterns/behaviors/expectations they had lived by in The Surface World would still affect them. He thought even with that, the advancements won still would bring a great improvement to Society.

The 'Up and Coming' Industrialist

Ryan's Earlier History - How he became an Industrial Magnate :

This all would be fiction, as someone as rich/influential as Ryan was portrayed would be known, but he could be modeled after various archetypes -- Howard Hughes building his Aerospace/Transportation/Entertainment businesses ... Though Hughes did start out with his father's substantial business fortune in the mid 20s, which Ryan did not quite have in the BioShock backstory[4].

Ryan came to America in the early 1920s .. The Roaring 20s

People who played the upward Stock Market and then got out before The Crash ('29) did very well, and money during the Depression actually deflated, making it worth even more. The Great Depression decade did offer big opportunities to those who had money. Business may have suffered because of that overall economic slowdown, but if Ryan's industrial venture were in an expanding business like electrical power systems (stated as his specialty), then losses could be minimal and the potential expansion great.

Big government building/construction projects likewise were happening at that time ( another appropriate industry which fit Ryan's required Know-how for Rapture later ).

Likewise if a business was involved-in/associated-with War Production, it could grow off government money in the war boom years. Ryan may have detested the wars of the "Ant Men", but it wouldn't have stopped him from taking advantage of the business opportunities.

It would be important at the time of Rapture's building that Ryan's accumulated wealth was not shrunk by a 'Firesale' as he left the Surface world. So a gradual selloff of his empire during the first period while Rapture was built (up to '1952), and even afterward as further resources were expended for Rapture's adjustments and modifications. Even up to (and after) the time of Ryan's "death", his Surface Empire may have continue in part, and even regrew as part of the 50s boom times.

--- --- ---

That Unfortunate 'Too Fast' Event Schedule/Timeline - Even For the Original BioShock Story :

Ryan, was a foreigner, an immigrant showing up in America as a child, probably with little money ( How much business/possessions/money would his father have available which was not confiscated by the Bolsheviks in Soviet run Russia ?? )

He builds a HUGE industrial empire ( Very rich - 100s of millions of dollars ) :

  • When he is still underage well into the 1920s
  • During the Great Depression most of the 1930s ( even the US Government ran out of money )
  • Through WW2 which ended/slowed/redirected alot of commerce which wasn't war related
  • Starting Rapture right at the end of WW2 ( and the Recession in the US economy in 1945 )

So its NOT quite like Howard Hughes, who had a family fortune to start with, and who was in his majority at the middle of 1920s.

Ryan's New Year's Speech (Moments Before the Kashmir Incident Starts)

""

Good evening, my friends.
I hope you are enjoying your New Year's Eve celebration;
it has been a year of trials for us all.
Tonight I wish to remind each of you that Rapture is your city.
It was your strength of will that brought you here,
and with that strength you shall rebuild.
And so, Andrew Ryan offers you a toast.
To Rapture, 1959.
May it be our finest year.”

""

The Shootout involving the Death of Frank Fontaine likely was shocking. Stories of the Violent Plasmid-wielding Splicers being involved, possibly even moreso. The initial disclosures of Fontaine's many crimes (including the enslaved Little Sisters) might have been quite disconcerting. Imprisonment of Fontaine's minions and ongoing investigation would have happened. We don't know if Sofia Lamb's arrest/trial was included within the current year. 'Poor' people being stirred up by the troublesome new Atlas person may not yet be an issue.

Ryan's Technical Developments :

Done within his Industrial 'Empire' :

  • Deep Sea Construction ( with some improvements made while actually doing the construction ). Definitely would need advancements in practical use ( things like ocean drilling rigs got started after WW2 ). Water construction had been used for large products like Dams.
  • Remote Monitoring and Control - Required to improve efficiency of Rapture construction
  • Geothermal Power systems used to Power Rapture ( particularly as used on the massive scale needed to provide Rapture with the power it needs ). Posit improvements in simplicity and ruggedness for technology available at the time (middle 1940s), and for Rapture's limited scope. Ryan was himself supposed to be a master 'Power' technologist ( possibly the basis for his Surface fortune, with the major expansions of that industry in The World in the 1920s and 1930s ).
  • Ryanium - Something that the Author of the Rapture Novel thought up. It is made to sound like a metal, but it is better to be the specialized material Rapture's windows are made of, needed to withstand the forces of the deep sea depths pressure ( and also possessing the needed optical qualities ) better than glass. Far more expensive - if that material was ever used structurally ( Leave that realistically up to massed Ferro-Concrete ).
  • Improved versions of Plasma Cutters were developed ( ontop of Ryan's previous industrial development ) which (eventually) made the seabed tunnel boring machines so efficient ( and allowed the extensive and cheaper Tunnel complexes to be subsequently built in Rapture -- Until more of Rapture was underground, than being in Cityscape buildings ).

AndrewRyanHephaestus3

1948 Ryan (In Rapture) supervising testing of a the new large Geothermal station grid. That huge turbine 'thing' at Hephaestus became alot of window dressing (kept for 'Tours') when the smaller distributed Turbine installations fairly early became the primary power source in Rapture.

Flexibility and maintainability was something that Andrew Ryan understood about power systems. It (fictionally) was what he made/grew his Fortune upon during the "Roosevelt Depression" in America.

Ryanzput
Golf apparently was one of Andrew Ryan's hobbies

Ryan All His Life Had 'Projects'  :

Ryan besides being a technical genius, moreso was an organizational genius who was able to make things happen when others failed ( Per the story he expanded his industrial empire DURING America's Great Depression ).

  • Got Rich once he arrived in America in the 1920s
  • Built a world spanning industrial empire ( through the FDR Depression and WW2 )
  • Building Rapture ( including funding it without a 'fire sale' of his worldly holdings )
  • Getting Rapture operating, populated and stabilized
  • Running Rapture would then be of less interest - once things were running ( and with a design which made much of it self-managing )
  • Stabilizing Rapture after the Economic distress of 1952 ( an expected 'adjustment' once the major Construction ended ).
  • The New ADAM Technology - Ryan would show how he could 'Make a Better Project'
  • Fighting the 'civil war' (Terrorist Uprising) and Keeping the City Alive (and winning).
  • Rebuilding Rapture and beyond ( after his 'death', pulling strings from 'behind the curtain' ).

Andrew Ryan's Rise :

Ryan because of his meteoric rise from a (near) penniless immigrant in ~1920 to an industrial magnate by the 1940s must have avoided the 1929 Wall Street Crash. He may hincreased his holdings buying companies/resources cheap from that financial mess. It should be Industries which were still growing even through the Depression : The Electric Power Industry ( named in-game as something Ryan was a Howard-Hughes-like expert at ). Oil was mentioned in the Novel. Some other parts of the World recovered sooner than the USA, them possibly having much less government meddling in their economies, which may have offered plenty of opportunities for Ryan's industrial empire to expand.

Where's the : "Ryan selling things to the Nazis ? Oh, my !!" Like IBM selling census tallying machines which were used to register all Germans, and coincidentally 'mark' Jews for later persecution. That's an oft repeated 'lil anti-capitalism' nugget certain philistines usually mention to fool ignorant/pliable people. The writers of this game do similar dishonesties.

Alternate Realities Without That Multiverse BS Bad Fantasy

" And so, I asked myself, in what country was there a place for men like me ? Men who refused to say yes to the parasites and the doubters. Men who believed that work was sacred and property rights inviolate. And then one day the happy answer came to me, my friends : there was NO country for people like me. And THAT was the moment I decided ... to build one. " - Andrew Ryan

It would be interesting to see what other alternatives Ryan had been investigating. When he finally made his decision, the "North Atlantic Project" started happening very rapidly. Preparations of resources must have already seen a great deal of previous efforts to get it all going so fast. With the MMORPG's open creation system and expansive content, all kinds of background elaborations can do more than hint at this part of Rapture's story.

Puttering Around

Proof Ryan was not killed. While on fire 'he' continues to blithely play golf.

Obvious it is an Animatronic Ryan still playing golf while burning. Ryan 'conned' and caught Fontaine within his own trap.

SPOILER ALERT - RYAN MIGHT STILL BE ALIVE

Rejuvenation For Ryan ? :

Ryan would be in his 1960s by the time of the MMORPG ( in exile from Russian around 1920 when he was about 12 according to the Novel ).

But in all that genetic/medical research - one project would have been very desirable - and completely within the realm of what ADAM Tonic technology had already achieved.

A significant plot development for the whole Rapture story, particularly if the typical ADAM side-effects which might be associated with this 'therapy' might be reversible/avoidable via the work now being done by Tenenbaum in New Rapture.

The side effects might also be exaggerated by the time we see it in the game because of the weaponization of Plasmids - causing more severe changes to the user, and Fontaine's INTENT may have been to make his followers mentally impaired, and also lower quality of bootlegged ADAM.

--- --- ---

"Evil" Ryan 'SEIZED' Fontaine Futuristics - Not Quite :

No detail in-game about how long it took Ryan to make that decision ( nor the City Council to consider the ramifications and then suggest the action ). BTW, freezing/seizing a criminal's property/assets is a COMMON practice of American society's justice systems ( to allow for victim restitution/reparations, etc ... ).

Fontaine's businesses would be in chaos after his 'death', so how long before the capacity to make ADAM and the available supply started dwindling ( with the attendant hoarding by the addicts to accelerate shortages ) ? The story made quite clear ADAM's addictive aspect ( if not the major harmful side effects ) to drive the games plot.

Fontaine did not seem to have any competent lieutenants ( who would probably be jailed for the same crimes anyway, IF they did exist ).

How early did 'Atlas' crawl out of the woodwork and start stirring things up (trying to cause riots) by telling people there was an ADAM shortage (out of one side of his mouth), while also telling them 'Ryan was a Tyrant' for 'Seizing' Fontaine Futuristics ( which Ryan WOULD HAVE PUBLICLY EXPLAINED was simply and OBVIOUSLY to MAINTAIN the ADAM production for stabilizing the addicted population ).

Too little real evidence/details of this process/events/process was given in the game - apart from all the vague complaints coming from Ryan's detractors ( and some bizarre/idiotic declarations from McDonagh ).

It would have ruined the 'shooting game' if Ryan had simply let Fontaine Futuristics Shut Down, and let Rapture go 'cold turkey'. Remember not very many Citizens were addicted at September 1958 - as there apparently was little ADAM-User tumor-ism/insanity yet evident to sufficiently scare the rest into NOT using Fontaine's ADAM poison ( which WOULD thereby largely eliminating ADAM from Rapture and the whole storyline ). The 'rebel'/Terrorist Splicers would have soon lost their powers, leading to their elimination, and Rapture then could sail off into its Glorious Future.

Statements Andrew Ryan Would Make ( Another Player Contest ? ) :

Ryan Quotes - Another Player Created Asset ( with Contests - Actually do that for all Well-Known characters ).

Create a Ryan Appropriate Quote :

  • "One of the worst things is to hear : 'Don’t be alarmed. We’re from the government, and we’re here to help.' "
  • "If I believed in a God, Then I would definitely have a Hell for Bureaucrats where they themselves would be afflicted for Eternity with the abuse and devastation they have perpetrated upon the Lives of so many others."
  • "We have to examine the people we let into Rapture better. We don't want any communists or other criminals in our City."
  • "Locking up Violent Splicers is NOT an imposition upon Free Will."
  • "The Pheromone Control I've employed does not steal Free Will from those who already have none. ADAM addiction is a cruel Slavemaster."
  • "Ask yourself, does A Rabid Dog have Free Will ?"
  • "When too many people make the wrong decision, they call it "a Crash", but others call it a Readjustment and an Opportunity."
  • "Those who decide to not abide by Society's Rules, should leave that Society and no longer be due its protection."
  • "The Only Things Parasites Create have been made to ABUSE and CONTROL Others. We seek to eliminate that in Rapture."
  • "Communism is a Disease of the Soul - Something which should be Cured"

---

"Wave of the Future" - A Ryan Saying ? ( Some kind of Howard Hughes-like OCD ? ) :

"Future of The Wave" gets repeated - meaning something (?) ...

Most likely said by someone else (NPC) which might be more Canon-friendly ( Why would Ryan say this except in a Splicer Dream ??) Maybe just a malfunctioning Accu-Vox.

---

"Time Rots Everything, Even Hope, For Weak Visionless Men" - Ryan talking about Sofia Lamb's Victims

"The Amazing Mr Ryan"  :

There would be a Documentary - probably a whole series of Documentaries ...

Of course Ryan would have a self-serving history of his achievements ( except unlike schizoid Comstock, Ryan's achievements were real and visible ). This was likely made even before Rapture was built, so to help sell his idea to prospective Rapturites (and investors) when the project was getting started.

Ryan's Doppleganger

Thinking about him being VERY Rich ( like one of the richest in the World ) to pay for the building of Rapture ( even with may more average 'rich people' chipping in to pay to build it ) ...

IF he disappeared it would be a World Wide news story. Howard Hughes was a known reclusive figure ( by the 1950s ). Neither the Game story nor that in the Novel portray Ryan to be that way.

SO his disappearance from The Surface is a bit problematical ( could be repaired with a few backstory clues with him becoming more and more mysterious/reclusive until by 1952 he is completely gone, OR have some Doppelganger still around up there to keep up appearances in his continuing surface empire ( what's left of it ). Ryan wouldn't 'Sell out his Worldly holdings in a Firesale', so all of it would have to be run for more than a decade.

A HAH !!! Story there for why Ryan's still alive !!! The ( one ) duplicate was the one whacked with the golf club ... ( The Animatronic things would still be better because Ryan would not sacrifice a minion for that stunt as Fontaine had ).

OK, now we have the story for BioShock 4 ( pretty much the same idea as Fontaines 'death' - FAKED ).

St Andrew (Andrei) - The Patron Saint of Russia :

Yes, tell us again, Levine, how Andrew Ryan was really 'jewish'. Levine stated this in 2015, long after the games came out, and Levine was at that time looking for a new game job, and was spewing/spinning (to 'get noticed') his idea of "Authentic Diversity".

Andrei (Andrew) was one of the Orthodox Churches Saints (one of the Apostles), and one of the Patron Saints of Russia.

John Shirley, who wrote the BioShock Novel, never seems to have heard of this new 'jewish fact', and goes on in that book to name several of Andrew Ryan's close relatives in Russia ( Belorussia was one of the founding 'Soviet Republics' ) who HAVE other Christian Saints names as well.

So sorry Kenny, Retcon'ing the Rapture lore to attempt to 'drum up' some work gig is no excuse for MORE After-The_Fact BioShock Canon-breaking RetCon.

Ryan For The MMORPG :

For the MMORPG, there would be lots more detail material in Flashbacks, old Audio Diaries, Newspaper Clippings, Radio/TV Interviews -- and ALL being alot less manipulatively distorted than what was foisted on the Player by the original BioShock writers ( who had to facilitate/manipulate their lame 'plot twist' ...)

The Parasites Lying Ways A Proposed MMORPG Audio Diary ...

Have a comment made by Ryan about : How F. D. Roosevelt and the Democrats stole credit for Hoover Dam from President Hoover, when Herbert Hoover had (before being President) been fundamentally responsible for its getting built successfully ( Herbert Hoover was not even invited to the dedication ceremony, and his name was not even mentioned in the speeches ). Ryan derisively comments : "What Typical Parasites those Democrats are."

  • Surface Assistance continues ( income from monies/properties put into Rapture Trust )
  • Ryan goes 'dark' to test Rapture's people
  • Fontaine dead.
  • Ryan loyalists seized control Hephaestus after many crazies there eliminated.

  • One determined Splicer/Alpha eliminated Sofia Lamb
  • Sofia Lamb's little Delusional Experiment Fails ( the separated 'Rest of Rapture' survives )
  • Ryan's faction (centered in Hephaestus) keeps Rapture alive with help from Surface

1970

  • New Rapture begins formed by several 'sane' Factions
  • Ryan Surface Organization assistance a great help
  • RYAN LIVES !!!

NOTE- In Rapture, things did not just happen instantly and in too rapid order as they did in that fantasy-ridden Infinite BS story timeline.

"Greatest Disappointment"  :

Not sure why Andrew Ryan should be so down on 'Jack', who is so obviously been manufactured as a creature of Fontaine's ( which Ryan is shown to have figured out in the WYK Room in Rapture Central Control ). Instead of making Ryan become "a quitter"/Gotterdammerungesque, it should have reinforced his resolve to rebuild Rapture and eliminate the Pheromone Control he was forced to use, and go on to give humanity the environment to reach the potential of its 'Free Will' -- FREE of the endless manipulations of the Parasites, on The Surface (and in Rapture). Atlas would be ended and Rapture would be reborn.

Ryan Was Winning :

Wasn't it Atlas who was (nearly) cornered at the point Jack arrives ? Without the Splicers to fight (now 'controlled' by Ryan) and a few remaining 'Normals' ( probably outclassed by Ryan's Splicers and Security men ), Atlas was doomed and facing almost immediate defeat (Maybe that's why Fontaine at this point was playing his 'Ace in the Hole' ... (What did he call his Mr Atlas Body-Building ADAM Binge ? His "Royal Flush up his Sleeve" ? HE knew very well what Splicing did to a person, so he must have been really desperate at that point.).

It wasn't Ryan's Philosophy that created Jack (evil people like Fontaine will use anything as a weapon), and as with all societies, it is upto the majority to defeat the 'evil' people'. Ordinary people were out of their minds/disrupted by something that was unexpectedly created ( the actual 'Shock' of the games Title ). Was the competitiveness of Ryan's Philosophy at fault ? OR rather the ruthlessness of people who didn't believe in Ryan's Philosophy ( WHO didn't believe in individuals driving improvement, WHO just wanted to TAKE rather than GIVE ) that were given an overwhelming weapon ?

So Ryan had turned that weapon back upon them. Jack was a weapon who had NO Free Will (something that was a significant part of Ryan's Philosophy) -- Made that way ( just as the 'Surface' people made people into parasites/slaves to the gain of others ) - Something Ryan could fix ( and he probably could see to Jack being freed -- If anything, so to prove a point ).

SO, Ryan was on the point of 'Winning' against Atlas, and would THEN seek to repair the damage done to Rapture ( whatever the Pheromone 'Control' was, it could be eliminated, as Ryan had previously eliminated so many elements from the Surface world ). WHY would Ryan abandon something he had based his life doing ? (( The writers story fell WELL short of its potential. ))

RyansHallOfWarning

Ryan's Trophy Wall - Corpses Put On Display :

Seen in Hephaestus - How many of those 'Trophies' were killed 'in the act' of trying to murder Ryan ( or even were killed by Ryan himself as they tried to murder him ) ??? How many were Terrorists ?? LIKE FOR Attempting to blow up Rapture Central Control or to damage the City's Power ... THAT would be a major attack against Rapture's survival.

Such a display might make a preventative impression on crazy Splicers, when more civilized measures have been proven to no longer work.

It is strange that in the various Audio Diaries from other Citizens you don't hear condemnations of Atlas and his Anarchists/Terrorists for killing a diary speakers family members/friends/colleagues. Remember that the actions that Ryan took were in reaction to the death and destruction brought about by Outlaws/Criminals.

The 'class warfare' alibi was rather weakly contrived to excuse murder and mayhem by the (exaggerated) number of 'downtrodden' - for which Ryan and the Citizens of Rapture ( according to the writers belief/storyline/plot ) were expected to unconditionally provide Welfare Payments for ( thus Facilitating antithesis Parasitism ).

Was McDonagh's body there on THAT WALL ? Perhaps McDonagh saw reason or changed whatever his bizarre thinking had been ( unlike in the Novel which isn't quite Canon ).

Ryan Being Misunderstood ( Intentionally "Twisted into the Fall Guy" By The Writers ) :

Many people left in Rapture possibly never 'turned' on Ryan, as he was most likely the only one keeping them alive. We are largely shown comments by malcontents and outright traitors -- Traitors to not just Ryan, but to Rapture itself. There would be thousands of other citizen survivors we conveniently never heard opinions from or saw.

The real madness ( or as I put it : dim-witted plot contrivance ) was having Ryan kill himself ( Ryan ordering Jack to kill him ) when at that point Ryan had almost won completely against Atlas/Fontaine, and would have a chance to restore HIS City. The gamewriters completely missed a truly Epic 'twist' : Where what we saw Ryan do could actually have been Ryan Faking his own Death - much like Fontaine had done. But sadly NO, they missed that opportunity which could have left the rest of the plot much the same ( blast/kill/boom/kill/kill mutated Fontaine, help cute Lil Sisters, etc ... ), and SPRING IT at the very end that *Ryan Still Lived* ...

( The killing scene so easily could have been one of the animatronic Ryan dummies from Ryan Amusements which the ADAM_Addled/delusional Jack THOUGHT he killed - If Ryan really didn't trust the Vita Chambers ( Like how were they exactly actually tested ??? ... when it is ONLY set for Ryan's genetic pattern ??????????????? ) -- Ryan could have manipulated Jack all kinds of ways, once he understood ( as seen and pieced together in that WYK Room) how Jack was being controlled.

A General Lack of Logic in A Game Allegedly with 'Story' :

Ryan's 'Trophy Wall' - More a Warning of what happens to Traitors ( Assassins killed by those Loyal to Ryan ... )

A bunch of people who worked for Ryan there did not seem to have much loyalty to him ( with their assassination attempts and all - those ones shown pinned up on that wall leading to Rapture Central Control ). Consider that there were many hundreds more who worked for Ryan and Rapture, who we have no evidence that they followed such a path.

It seems a bit fabricated and idiotic (a case of 'The Plot Says So') that McDonagh thinks it is going to be better by handing Fontaine's Plasmid Manufacturing Facilities over to the thugs/criminals who worked with Fontaine, so they can hand Plasmids to Atlas's terrorists. Exactly WHO SHOULD Ryan be handing Fontaine Futuristics over to ? Especially since Fontaine probably was not one to share power with Anyone ? The Game Designers/Developers seem to have shoveled on the "Ryan is the Bad Guy" stuff pretty thick, with few real explanations of why Ryan did certain things. They suggest virtually no reasonable/likely/logical alternatives - like shutting Fontaine Futuristics down as a public health hazard, or maintaining/converting it to work on a Cure ... Later a 'civil war'-ish thing is raging, and and Ryan is supposed 'to give up' an equalizer ( control of Splicers and most of the ADAM supply ), and let Atlas's army of Splicers take over Rapture instead ?? Madness.

Convenient Inconsistency of Ryan and Of Events Staged in The Game

It (the whole game) was all a setup/fabrication for the WYK Ryan swansong 'Twist' which is pretty "dim" ( a kinder word than "stupid" ) in itself. Ryan's character was UNLIKELY to be a *Surrender Monkey*, that being quite contradictory to all the other things explained about him in the game. This makes you think : How fast the 'Atlas Problem' really would have actually been over IF Ryan had offered 10000 ADAM to anyone taking Atlas "Dead or Alive" ( Everyone seemed right-pleased to be gunning for Jack because of a 1000 ADAM Bounty -- So how long could Atlas hold out against such a Proscription ??? ) If anything, it would have curtailed alot of Fontaine/Atlas's activities while he was alive, as he would never know when he might turn around and get a shotgun blast in the chest/face. The Splicers whom he 'led', being insane, might not EVER be too trustworthy. It would just take one successful attempt, and then "Problem Solved". Pathetic. We need better writing than this from games - particularly a franchise they endlessly touted as being about 'Story'.

Ryan's Philosophy was about letting People decide for themselves, and get the greater benefits or less penalties resulting from those decisions. Let the People/Citizens of Rapture use the ADAM products if they wanted. They weren't obviously ( convenient to the game story ) seen as harmful at first, and it is most likely Fontaine purposefully had his minions 'splice up' into virtual monsters ( look at the ads for the consumer Plasmids and Tonics -- the ones Fontaine and Atlas had their minions employ far exceeded what those were ).

The Pheromone Control thing was Ryan neutralizing Atlas's Splicers, to stop them from tearing up his city, to stop them from murdering people in the streets and wrecking the economy ( all the stuff Rapture's Citizens needed to survive at that point and afterward ). And the real effects of Pheromones can hardly be called 'mind control'.

They (the BioShock Game Authors) never really exposed what would have been Ryan's plan to rebuild/recover the City, and find a Cure for those maimed by ADAM ( plans he surely must have had before Jack arrived ). Atlas had pretty much been defeated by the time we come blundering thru as Jack, and unknowingly ( or are programmed to) assist Fontaine ( Either way - there's no choice really there ). It all simply made sure Ryan had no opportunity to resurrect Rapture.

The Elephant in The Room ( at Ryan's Council Meetings ) :

What to do about Atlas ( just let the Security do its work and get the populace to cooperate ).

( "The Elephant in The Room" was actually a Jimmy Durante bit that became a Meme )

THE MEETING ( example of a City Council Meeting )

Saturn's Utopian Reign (Virgil) -- I thought 'still alive' Ryan was calling himself 'Zeus' now ???

Tired of Eating Fish (heard in Novel) ??  :

Ryan : "Make a Better Fishstick"

Beef-E, etc ...

Too much of the Game (BS1) Was "Ryan Baadddd" ... :

Just more of the same vague contrivance to facilitate 'that Evil Ryan - it is all his fault' manipulation to enable that lame game 'twist' ( which has you following the wishes of the lying terrorist who you are misled(forced) to believe is 'the good guy' - It is 'shoveled on pretty thick' - with nothing the Player could change if you thought otherwise, anyway ). BS2 and that Minervas Den DLC just followed that pattern.

Since the whole narrative is so spotty, WE have to fill in the details ourselves ( That's been said over and over). Ryan is no doubt pissed over reports that Fontaine isn't Playing Ball/Cricket (by the rules in Rapture ). Fontaine 'gets a pass' with his thuggish business practices, the smuggling that Ryan KNOWS ( but somehow cant prove - for years ) is being done by Fontaine, various stories about children being abused, businessmen/citizens threatened/murdered, addictive poison being sold to consumers, the facilitating of Parasitism, etc .. etc .. etc...

SO Ryan will do what he does best - Out-compete his opponents. 'Give the Chain a tug' - give Fontaine a proper opponent in this new thing happening in Rapture - Give Rapture 'A Better Product'. And then Fontaine WILL go - completely outdone once Ryan comes upto bat - and all Ryan WOULD need to do would be a 'tug' ( Ryan talking to himself didn't say "I'll string that SOB Fontaine up with the Great Chain and tow him around behind by Limo-Sub to feed the fish !!!". ( Ryan was a good/extremely successful experienced industrialist businessman and Fontaine was just a thug/conman - completely out of Ryan's class ).

And It was obvious that Ryan didn't simply have Fontaine killed, like Fontaine in his place would have done in an instant. And as for 'flaming hoops' ( as in 'jumping through' ) THAT is why it took so long for Ryan to finally get Fontaine - He did it LEGALLY - an legal arrest for Smuggling where Fontaine chose to resist Rapture's Police Authorities - and in those days, Cops didn't think twice about firing back at criminals. Don't forget about the dangerous/murderous Splicers Fontaine employed, evident at 'The Shootout' - mentioned by McDonagh, as I recall - Hardly a kosher business practice that ... Dontcha think ????

Only later (in BaS) did they bother (in-game) to publicly express reasonings/justifications showing that the Citizens in Rapture WOULD HAVE agreed with what Ryan subsequently did. They (Rapture's Citizens) were people from THAT time, AND NOT NOW -- and they would perfectly understand putting down a dangerous criminal abusing their freedoms and safety. The original game spews its ignorance of how things in the real world work, totally avoiding the fact that the Libertarian/Objectivist system installed in Rapture would HAVE THE PEOPLE carry out and SEE Justice done. They would NOT just lay it all upon Ryan like in some lame-arsed simpleton's plot. The story writing cannot justify this lack of action (via the game setting's chaotic vagueness), as it was completely missing when endless manipulative 'hints' forced the story the opposite way.

I don't hold Ryan blameless ( or rather I DO HOLD THE WRITER TO BLAME for the way he is contrived/made to STUPIDLY act in this game -- Again as in : a setup/a required environment for the base shoot-fest nature of the game ). I've enumerated all the illogic and ignorant assumptions about how the game writers 'have things work'. If you simply dismiss/discount all those, then you can actually start piecing it all together. When you look at what Ryan did - like the long time waiting for Rapture's people to handle the ADAM problem - mysteriously they never do. THEN, when Ryan actually acts, all we hear is detractors from biased sources, and none from the majority of Rapture. It is because THAT would blow the writer's contrived plotline 'out of the water'. "Ryan is Bad" / "Ryan is A Tyrant" is their anthem/mantra, when in the Real World (for people of THAT TIME) Ryan acted as the Hero to the type of people which would have 'gone to Rapture'. The People of Rapture would want such Anarchist/Terrorists (like Atlas) gone, for the same reasons Ryan did. It can hardly be made plainer.

I'm just sad that, by and large, the storyline was a manipulative hack job, and only window dressing for what is still a Shooter-fest game. And the Hype it got for allegedly being something *special* ( Most expressed by the writers themselves ) only shows how poor the whole gaming industry's products have become. It is sadly funny, because the later (Infinite BS) STORY|story drivel is magnitudes worse.

Ryan's New Years Eve Speech - "has been a year of trials ... and with that strength you shall rebuild."

What might these 'trials' be and what would cause Ryan to use those words 'shall rebuild' with that inflection ?

The Fontaine 'Shootout' ... Possibly the biggest incident of violence up to that time in Rapture. Was the food production at Neptunes Bounty disrupted ( damage from the 'firefight' and the fact that Fontaine's people had been running it ... )

Huge criminal operation exposed. Extended criminal/conspiracy involvement with Fontaine's Smuggling being disclosed ( disruptions of dependent businesses and involved influential people (corruption) going to jail ) ?

Takeover of the "Fontaine Futuristics" ADAM complex (Note - no mention of takeover of any other Fontaine assets til the Bas DLC ). A 'philosophical' shock for Rapture, supposedly with or without inappropriate motives by their Founder Ryan -- Who is doing little more than simply stabilizing the addict-threatened Rapture ( Alone_at_Last ). If Rapture wanted its addiction fix so bad, was it good to let Fontaine Futuristics fall apart/stop ?? Fontaine did not seem the type to have any competent 'lieutenants' ( who might have decided to "take over his operation by retiring Fontaine 'prematurely' ... " ), who might have been available to 'turn it over to'.

And what else in Rapture would need to do 'rebuild' at that point ? A notion of stability, perhaps.

What of ADAM shortages (a 'Run on ADAM' ???) caused by the chaos at Fontaine Futuristics -- likely happening until Ryan had the City take the complex over and reopen/run-it/restore-production ? It would have shutdown in the disorder and the addict's ADAM would stop and eventually run out. ( Secondary - a disruption of fishing operations - perhaps food shortages of fish til it was 'all sorted out' ? )

Consider A whole lot of addicted people going 'cold turkey' and some rioting ( or calling for Ryan to "Do Something" ) ? Not a "Run on all the Banks", but instead a "Run on all the Drugstores" ???

Other incidents (some catastrophic leaks causing casualties - Dionysus and/or others) ? Damage caused by Atlas's anarchists ( already (pre-Kashmir ) ?? -- Though we don't really hear much about it - You would think stuff like that would be Headline News all over Rapture.

Remember that Rapture is still largely in a state of Normalcy up to this point. The coming 'civil war' (Terrorist Attacks) and the disruptions/destruction/mass-fatalities will be magnitudes more disturbing ( but THAT has NOT happened yet ).

'SO,It just sounded good to the gamewriters ??? ( Perhaps with not uch thought about where this actually was in Rapture's history ... Jumping the gun ... )

OR just at THAT POINT IN TIME the recent incidents WERE actual 'Big Disturbing Things' for Rapture ??? ( I use this logic to question why Little si

-

Is this another example of manipulative game Writers 'implying' how terrible they wanted Ryan to be - Trying to point to this Speech as 'deluded' ( or various other negative flavoring ), EXCEPT THAT WHEN IT WAS ACTUALLY GIVEN the Real Nastiness in Rapture had NOT even happened yet nor were predicted by anyone, nor had he reacted by using strong methods to PUT DOWN the Terrorists.

BS2 - Why should Ryan Show (Some) Admiration for Fontaine While Disparaging Sinclair ?? :

More Strawman rubbish from the later Devs, when Ryan most certainly SHOULD/WOULD have already known what a scum-bucket/criminal Fontaine was already ??? Fontaine's unlawful 'gangsterism' could hardly be kept secret in Free Press Rapture.

Ryan thought Sinclair was an opportunist ? And somehow Fontaine was not ? Sinclair might not have believed in 'The Great Chain' the same way Ryan did, but was still in business for himself and his own advancement -- Which was STILL a large part of Ryan's Philosophy, and Sinclair went ALONG with and supported and made work Ryan's system, instead of trying to break it as Fontaine did.

Are the writers implying that Sinclair cheated people ? Yes they did. And no he didn't. Yet they ever actually showed any real evidence of that ? It was Half-Explaining to so many ignorant Players how business works - done to intentionally distort the situation.

The writers have SAID that 'Let the Buyer Beware' WAS the watchword in Rapture's Philosophy -- Where YOU are responsible for your own decisions. And Free Speech wasn't blocked in Rapture ( That is the traditional COUNTER to "Let the Buyer Beware", where REPUTATION was the system in-force. )

Sinclair a 'Huckster' ? Ryan would understand that small businesses/niches would make up more of Rapture's economy than the larger Big-Market-type industries of The Surface World ( the ones Rapture was far too small to actually support ).

-

THIS IS Inconsistency from Game Developers who have to make their characters mouth whatever they found convenient to set the tone they were contriving ... More 'Laying It On Thick' to make Sinclair out as a dodgy character - While forcing a simpleton-style condemnation of Capitalism (and Ryan) at the same time.

Part of the puzzle/challenge of the MMORPG will be trying to resolve/repair such original inconsistencies.

Andrew Ryan Knew :

Andrew Ryan says he initially suspects that Jack is a CIA spook, then later comes to the conclusion that he is NOT - based on his behavior :

How come Andrew Ryan did not notice Jack's entrance to Rapture was with a Bathysphere ? While of course Atlas does (but then Jack is his pawn), and the order went out to get Jack to Rapture, and Fontaine may have made sure a Bathysphere was there waiting for Jack.

If Ryan DID notice, might he easily figured out Jack is his own blood ( that stolen Embryo... etc ), therefore he could now be playing a game with Jack (and Atlas). But then how did Fontaine arrange the Bathysphere to be there ( not having Ryan blood for the Genetic Lock ), if the system is supposed to be truly 'locked'? Was the Lockdown system not as lock-tight (as they made you believe in telling the story - "Sure, the boys in Ryan's lab can make it hack-proof. But that don't mean we ain't gonna hack it.").

There supposedly were many (some) privately owned 'submarines' (mis-called "Bathyspheres"), and even Fontaine Futuristics made some. But that was a Metro Bathysphere ( still with the old Ryan greeting message ).

Ryan might notice the event anyway because there should have been NO Bathysphere waiting at the Surface station ( nice and ready to take anyone wandering by on the sea down to Rapture ??? ). Sorry, with Ryan shown to be so serious about the City's Secrecy and preventing detection, it should not have been left there as part of any normal happenings ( Heck he should have had the Lighthouse torn down long since ). So much for Ryan's 'paranoia' by not keeping a better watch on the entrance to Rapture ... OR did he know more about what was going on - setting up 'conning' Atlas ?).

Because of the Vita Chambers ( "Set supposedly ONLY to Ryan's Frequency" ) Jacks use of those might have been a 'tipoff' also ( The outraged Splicers wanting their Bounty Reward (1000 ADAM) definitely would have complained to Ryan ). This story detail all could be skipped as being tainted 'Canon' because of the game's Auto-Save variation they created employing it, but if "ITS CANON" then it could be more evidence for Ryan to know well ahead of time who Jack must be.

Tesla Was Still Alive In 1948 :

Perhaps Ryan ( Being a 'World-Class' Power Tech engineer ) had known Nikola Tesla ( the MMORPG can have backstory name dropping too ... )

Ryan was Winning - SO Why Suddenly Did Ryan Turn 'Surrender Monkey' ? ( Except : "Was Needed For The Plot" )  :

Wasn't it Atlas who was (nearly) cornered at the point Jack arrives ? ( Likely why the 'Ace in the Hole' was activated ?? ) Without the Splicers to fight for him (now 'controlled' by Ryan), and with few remaining Atlas Supporters (un-spliced normals), and probably far outclassed by Ryan's Splicers and Security men, Atlas was doomed and facing almost immediate defeat. And then THAT failed. (What did Fontaine call his 'Mr Atlas Body-Building' ADAM Binge ? His "Royal Flush up his Sleeve" ? Or the "Inside Straight" ? -- As it WAS an act of Desperation ...).

It wasn't Ryan's Philosophy that created Jack (Evil people like Fontaine will USE anything and anyone as a weapon to get what they want). As with all Societies, it is upto the majority to defeat the 'evil' people'. A number of ordinary people were out of their minds/disrupted by something that was unexpectedly created. Was the competitiveness of Ryan's 'Philosophy' at fault for this ? OR Rather, was it the ruthlessness of people who DIDN'T believe that Philosophy ? ( Those who didn't believe in individuals driving improvement, who just wanted to TAKE rather than GIVE/PRODUCE ? ) Miscreant who were conveniently given an overwhelming weapon ? So Ryan then had turned that weapon back upon them (or at least nullified it).

Jack was a weapon who had No 'Free Will' (a significant part of Ryan's Philosophy) -- Jack was MADE that way ( just as the 'Surface' people made people into parasites/slaves by denying them freedom ) - Something Ryan could fix ( and he probably could have seen to Jack being freed -- if anything, to Prove A Point -- MEN DON'T HAVE TO BE SLAVES. ).

Ryan was on the point of 'winning' against Atlas, and THEN he would seek to repair the damage done to Rapture. Whatever the 'Pheromone Control' was, it could be eliminated/its-use-discontinued, as Ryan had previously worked to remove Parasitic elements from his Rapture society. WHY would Ryan abandon something he had based his life doing and THEN so easily give up on his greatest achievement ? IT makes NO SENSE as it goes against everything we knew about Ryan. That's a VERY poor contrived story telling in my opinion ( Like SO many lame-assed movies these days where neat visual "scenes" are the producers goal, and a weak/feeble plot is loosely woven to try to fit together to provide reason for those 'scenes' ).

Ryan Be De Ebil ?  :

http://bioshock.wikia.com/wiki/BioShock_2_Multiplayer_Loading_Screen_Quotes

ATLAS : Portrait of a Parasite - Andrew Ryan explains the 'Ways of the Weak'

"Apollo Square Condemned - Anyone Entering or Exiting will be Shot on Sight.."

Atlas's supporters inhabit this place and Atlas ( who's Splicers murdered citizens in the streets ) is frequently seen there. It is a warren for "The Enemies of Raptures Survival".

Why not just close/seal the doors and turn off the power and air and kill all the Terrorists inside ? Those who wish to escape will be vetted as they leave, and those prevented by the evil ones WILL be turned on inside. It is Not Even required to kill them all - Just to weaken and thin them out/isolate them/take their hostages away. Delay long enough and their addiction will overcome them.

Simply kill them all ???? Ryan did not do that apparently. Sofia Lamb would have. Fontaine would have. But remember Ryan is supposedly "the Bad Guy" ... The One condemned whether he allegedly goes with or against 'His Principles and Philosophy'. But then, we never really heard from all the people who Ryan managed to protect and keep alive during this attack upon the city's survival. They were people who had gone through WW2 and knew about when strong measures were needed to handle real evil.

Ryan Gotten Wrong :

Ryan did not hate 'altruism' ( He did it himself by expending all his worldly wealth to build Rapture and to save at least part of mankind ). Instead, he hated 'false altruists' -- which are people who use 'altruism' for their own ends ( as in causing/making other people to be 'altruistic' and profiting in Wealth or Power ). Forced collectivism destroys individual freedoms and since (shown in the novel) members of his family were murdered in the name of Communism/Collectivism, there was a good reason for him to hate it. Likewise the Russian Church was powerless in stopping the mass-murder.

The problem is that labels are thrown about in the game ( It is a shoot-em-up blast-fest game which makes these ideas far down in priorities to bother with addressing them cohesively ).

"The Great Chain" IS a form of Collectivism (using the basic definition), so when Ryan says 'Collectivism' he must mean something more Real World specific. Society still works together, but collective actions are limited to those which don't interfere with individual's reasonable freedoms.

In Defense of Ryan :

Quote from Somewhere on the Interwebz I cant Find again :

"Also Ryan can be seen to resemble d'Anconia', as he is willing to compromise his principles to defeat the 'Looter' enemy which cannot be otherwise defeated. Perhaps he did have some grand plan to defeat Atlas and return victorious, perhaps his plan was Jack, a living metaphor for Ryan himself; he that was controlled by his foes into unspeakable acts, does himself defeat his foes by sheer resolve and will power. "

-

The WYK room in Rapture Central Control shows that Ryan has worked out what was happening, and all the (little) resistance that Jack runs into seems just a ploy ( Consider if you could ever fight a 'Zerg Rush' of 20 Fly-bots and 30 Splicers simultaneously ... Ryan would have resources like that to stop you ). The part the developers missed was they COULD have had a EPIC Twist of Ryan Faking His Death ( like Fontaine had ), and then aiming Jack at Fontaine ( even if at that point Ryan had just about won the 'civil war' and Atlas was on his last legs - It would have been ironic for Wanna-be King Atlas to be done in by his own Pawn. )

Another wheel within a wheel - Ryan using Jack as a precipitator -- to expose other opponents that also might exist in the City which he would have to deal with AFTER he dealt with Fontaine/Atlas. Tenenbaum surfaces. Ryan may need HER to assist in a Cure for his City), Sander Cohen comes out of the woodwork, Steinman, etc ...

SO with all the reasons, we only saw what Ryan wanted us to see, it is completely plausible' he can be back for a Sequel ( or better in this Rapture Reborn MMORPG ), as a shadowy force still pulling strings and guiding HIS city to its future.

Ryan is the Bad Guy Cuz 'He Abandons his Principles and Other Stuffs' ... :

I have the feeling that it is the BioShock Developers/Writers who had not a clue for what Rapture population's real reaction to Fontaine's and THEN Atlas's mayhem and murdering and destructive rebellion should have been for Rapture's inhabitants. Levine & Co have lived too long in fortunate Safety to understand.

The people THERE in Rapture had only just come out of World War 2, which had many restrictive measures put into place as 'War Measures' which were subsequently lifted after the war was won. Curfews, ID checks, Restricted Areas, Shortages, Rationing, Locking up Seditionists/Traitors/Spies, Real attacks on Civilian targets, family members killed, etc ... --- All things the People of That Time had gone thru 'for the duration' of that war. THAT'S ALL REAL HISTORY. Today there is whining when the least little minor thing is imposed or when laws are enforced ( BUT the cries are 'not so much', by many of those same whiners, WHEN Constitutional Freedoms are stolen/ignored by bigger and bigger government. ) THAT whiney-ness is more a fabricated mindset being Projected in the game upon the denizens of Rapture, and it has little to do with historical reality.

Fontaine is finally cornered as the arch Smuggler ( and 'Oh my !!', his ill-gotten gains are 'Seized' ).

Splicers are murdering people in the streets and Atlas's followers are disastrously disrupting the City.

Atlas stirs up destruction that threatens the livings and even lives of most of the City's inhabitants.

And RYAN is allegedly the 'hated' man for imposing security measure to try to stop all those things and return the City to normal.

The Whiners whine "Why cant we just get along", as murder and mayhem is happening ( WE see the result of what has happened to Rapture ).

The Anarchist's Cry is 'Tyrant Ryan', except Ryan's strongest measures are Carried Out to try to STOP the Murderous Anarchists who are killing and destroying. (( Only in bad writing can writers have it both ways like this. ))

Ryan contains the threat ( and the whines start in about him 'abandoning His Principles' ). The voices we hear don't seem afraid of the Anarchy and Murder in the Streets -- As if it is just a normal everyday thing. So it all must not be as bad as 'evil' Ryan there says it is. BS. The majority of survivors would be CHEERING restoration of order by Ryan and EXTERMINATION of the Anarchists.

We have simply been fed the usual clueless PC take on things - created by people who never faced any REAL threat in their entire lives. People in Rapture would not be like how the designers/developers think they should be - they would have lived thru seriously hazardous times and KNOWN who's side they were on - Ryan's.

Scene You Never Got to See :

After Jack (rather AFTER the Little Sisters drain Atlas/Fontaine of his life-sustaining ADAM goo), then Ryan appears and promises to "get Jack help", and then cuts Fontaine's head off and comments about "Having a nice place to put it". So Jack is subsequently deprogrammed by Ryan's experts (taking a while), and is sent away to the Surface, while Ryan sets out to "Save his city".

Is THIS the 'Bad' ending or 'Good' ending ? Isn't Jack at that point 'a major headcase' with all the ADAM he ingested in such a short time ? He couldn't even tell[6] that he 'killed' a rather poor animatronic dummy of Ryan[7] when WYK-ordered-to by Atlas. So all the other hallucinations of a giant Charlie McCarthy Climbing the Empire State Building carrying Fay Raye (who for some reason looks like Jack Black in drag) weren't overly real either... Well that's what happens when you try to 'follow the story' of 'mental' people.

I Am The Ryan-man!!! :

Forum Posting : "It would've been cool if they did do a BioShock game based on Andrew Ryan, like you play as A.R. as a young adult, before he goes beneath the Atlantic, and the game could finish off to "The New Year" where Rapture went to hell."

Not sure what kind of plot you would have ( it wouldn't be 'BioShock' ) as he was an immigrant who got lucky and became a rich industrialist and basically had his own way up thru the building of Rapture and up to the time he had the showdown with Fontaine.

Maybe they could have him have a secret identity and go out at night to fight crime.... or something.

Misc Ryanisms :

  • A MAN BUILDS. A PARASITE ASKS, "WHERE'S MY SHARE?" ( often not just asks, but demands )
  • THE GREAT CHAIN IS GUIDED BY OUR HAND. ( the more who pull it, the more it achieves )
  • THE GREAT CHAIN OF INDUSTRY TIES AND UNITES US. ( lack of industry weighs all down )
  • ALTRUISM IS THE ROOT OF ALL WICKEDNESS. ( and forced 'altruism' is even worse )
  • THE GREAT WILL NOT BE CONSTRAINED BY THE SMALL. ( and the 'small' benefit from the work of the 'great' )
  • THE ARTIST SHOULD NOT FEAR THE CENSOR. ( but free opinions can be expected )
  • NO GODS OR KINGS. ONLY MAN. ( nor kings who declare themselves gods )

Ryan Revised History (as per the Novel) ?  :

The area which the Novel author selected might not have been the best because of the disruptions taking place there :

Ryan's Early Life in Russia .... near Minsk ... A fairly complicated situation there :

1813–1917 To Russian Empire

1918–1918 Under German occupation

1918–1919 To Belarusian National Republic

1919–1919 To Byelorussian SSR

1919–1920 Under Polish occupation (actually changed hands twice)

1921–1941 To Byelorussian SSR, since 1922 in the Soviet Union

So NOW Andrew Ryan is Supposed to Be a Cutout American Jew Who Rejects 'Judaism' in Every Way ?

According to Levine - mentioned years after the game came out : Ryan is NOW a 'jew in name only' ( This used supposedly to give 'diversity' and 'authenticity' to a computer game - one which mostly deals with mass-slaughtering things ). Noteworthy also is : The majority of evil/maniacal characters in the game seem to be 'Jewish'. This is not overly complementary, and might seem a bit more like overcompensation ?

-

"Authentic Diversity" - That Levine interview was in 2015 ? Seems a bit RetCon this new identity for Ryan. Was there a clue anywhere about this in the BioShock games or in the BioShock Novel ( John Shirley might have elaborated upon it ) indicating this new Jewish nature of Andrew Ryan ?

Consider : "Andrew" (Andrei) is the patron saint of Russia (Orthodox Christian Russia) and the Ukraine. Is that really a name a Jew would take or be allowed to take within Russian domination ? In the Novel, Ryan's fathers name is 'Pyotr' ( "Peter" is another very important Christian saint ) and a relative is "Demitri" ( ? St. Demetrios -- another Orthodox saint ). Maybe Shirley didn't get the memo ? ( Or rather there was no such understanding at the time the Novel was written ).

Seems a bit fishy. Levine's recent interviews mention some new game company he's trying to organize (and something about "Narrative Legos" - which sounds like variable/Player-shapeable story plots, as a game mechanism to allow/facilitate replayability). In any case, it sounds to me more like Levine is trying to be 'trendy' for the Game Industry - THAT really being behind all his loudly retro-mentioned 'Diversity' stuff.

Ryan's Rise As An Industrialist :

Ryan's Electric Plasma well-drilling head device ( used in his oil fields ) was the basis for his latest industrial fortune, and was also the thing which made the Geothermal Power system at Hephaestus/Vulcan's Forge/Hudson possible ( and thus Rapture itself ). Other less efficient drilling technologies would have been impractical - Ryan's technology allowed many more lower capacity 'wells' to be constructed faster and cheaper, and continuing additions/replacements as the existing wells failed/clogged over the years.

The plasma cutters also greatly lowered the cost of various kinds of construction ( digging thru rock for one ) and more than a few industrial processes (requiring heat processing ...). The numerous farms built in bedrock tunnels were far cheaper to build than buildings.

Other components of Ryan's power technologies were also used in the City's energy distribution systems powering Rapture.

The Radio/Radar/Electronic Jammers used as a surface defense around Rapture's location could also be attributed to Ryan's engineering abilities.

Would You Kindly Crush Fontaine's Skull :

Ryan, as a rich man, would have been subjected to the efforts of many 'conmen' in his lifetime, and would have developed an attitude, if not ways, of handling them. So when Ryan fully discovered Fontaine's gambit with Jack (When ?), and that False Identity as Atlas, he would have been well ready for handling that situation. I could just see Ryan saying to himself : " If Fontaine could fake his own death, then Why Can't I ? And I will catch that miserable Parasite within his own trap. Like all parasites, he needs to feel the crush of the Heel ".

Ryan - Much Smarter Than Game Developers Gave Him Credit ( HE would be far smarter than they are ... ) :

Ryan allegedly sends Splicers when YOU get to Smugglers Den ... Maybe Ryan was using YOU (Jack) as a bird-dog to discover its location ??? The WYK room shows Ryan worked much of the situation out ( for quite a while already. Could all that stuff be done within a few hours of Jack arriving ?? ) and it very possible that Ryan was using YOU (Jack) to lead him to Atlas/Fontaine.

This would be one of the Lore extensions in the MMORPG. Revisiting what we experienced in BS1/BS2/MD from another viewpoint to show the truth ( verbatim recreations shown with additional info filled in ) would be very interesting ( and a great creation for Player Creators to Work on and refine ). There's that whole set of happenings in those games which could be recreated, and have all the more complex interconnections of events/motives/reasons illustrated ( and the Players would love every bit of it ).

Would 'Atheist' Ryan have Built a 'Cathedral' to his Philosophy ?? :

Didn't he ? Rapture ... :

Would that be the Cityscape toy seen out the windows, and the reason for lighting it that way ...

Lucky thing energy was cheap ( The power provided by Hephaestus, and the other competing power companies ), and fluorescent lights had already been invented ( and Bioluminescence probably a developed technology ).

A Monument to his Philosophy is a better term(?).

Ryan's Creed :

"I believe in no God, no invisible man in the sky. But there is something more powerful than each of us, a combination of our efforts, a Great Chain of industry that unites us. But it is only when we struggle in our own interest that the chain pulls society in the right direction. The chain is too powerful and too mysterious for any government to guide. Any man who tells you different either has his hand in your pocket, or a pistol to your neck." ― Andrew Ryan

Thing Ryan Would Say :

Ryan : "I say 'A man decides' and Sofia Lamb says 'All men are slaves, so lets us have an efficient complete slavery.' She is the enemy, a denier of freedom and rights, and convinces others to do her dirty work -- the ultimate Parasite."

So You Think Andrew Ryan was a "Conservative" ? :

He obviously was a "fiscal conservative" - balanced budgets and minimal government and taxation.

But what about all the freedom of drug stuff allowed in Rapture ? Or was it the part about being Responsible for yourself after you've taken the drugs ?

Ryan said to let the people figure it out - like when side effects from the ADAM abuse started being seen. Freedom without Responsibility is just another kind of Parasitism.

You want the Drugs, but then when Mr Insanity and Mr Malignancy comes 'a-knockin', THEN it is someone else's fault ? "Nobody Knew", so that means rush into it fullbore - WHAT could possibly go wrong ? Likely, there were plenty of people in Rapture who wouldn't touch ADAM, and doubly so once the side-effects started manifesting themselves ( and the Press attention, conveniently omitted from the game, started reporting the mental and physical damage it did to people ).

Reborn :

Using his Revitalization Product ( the last advancement before the 'civil war' - the Vita-Chamber ) by Ryan after the Jack/Fontaine incident - Ryan had used the machine before beginning his shadow presence as 'Zeus'.

Or somesuch.

The true test of the Citizens of Rapture would now be to manage themselves without blaming someone else for everything that went wrong. Ryan could still assist and steer things from the shadows.

Drunken Ryan - The Audio Diary :

"Take Your Socialism, and Shove It Up Your Ass, Roosevelt !!!"

"Oh Right, Celebraytin ..."

*Squeak of reclining chair* is heard.

"I thought I would have some decent competition (hic), but Fontaine just turned out to be a common thug ... We just watched as the ADAM, he had overdosed himself with(hic), reduced him to a puddle of rotting flesh. Kind of poetic that ... just a piece of slime after all."

*Hic* "Who the Hell Said I was fricken Jewish ??? ..."

"A Sea Slug, an a smuggler, an Fontaine all walk into this bar ... Wait wait. Its TWO Sea Slugs, an ..."

*Sound of Falling backward off Chair* *Thud*

"Ow. That Great Chain here don't mean anybody knows how to make a %#@%#ing decent chair ..."

Rapture and Ryan's Real Greatness :

A City is a Fragile place, and for Rapture to not have turned into a 'Cold Water-filled Tomb(tm)' by the time we see it ( or even the years later in BS2 ), it had to have something that kept it alive.

Ryan had had to put more effort into keeping the City alive than in fighting Atlas.

Luckily Fontaine/Atlas's direct effect was less than you would think. He might egg-on ADAM-Addled people to 'revolt', but more often they would be killing themselves/each-other in doing so. We saw from Stanley Poole's story that a single man could kill hundreds. But Rapture's Citizens would fight back and quickly kill most of Atlas's ADAM_Addled Anarchists.

People are capable of doing great things, particularly when their survival is at stake, and THAT'S the *TRUE* story of Rapture. Things fell apart, but only so far. The Resourcefulness, cooperation, innovation of the Citizens of Rapture was what saved it. Ryan did a great deal, but ultimately it was Rapture's people who kept Rapture alive.

Sofia Lamb never controlled more than the least significant quarter of the city, otherwise her disorderly delusion would have quickly made things collapse catastrophically, ending her AND Rapture ( and making BS2, so many years later, impossible ).

Seriously do you think 'The_Rapture_Family' could run and maintain Hephaestus - AFTER you've seen what a shithole the parts of Rapture which Sofia Lamb controlled had degraded to ???

Andrew Ryan : "I will make no Proclamations, I will dictate no Laws".  :

Unfortunately when terrorists start slaughtering the Citizens, and try to destroy Rapture, things have changed and action must be taken. Flawed assumptions were pushed at and onto the Player ... intentionally ( to justify that weak 'twist', it is very sad that it went that way when there was so much potential ).

Investigate what various Real World leaders do/did as War Measures. (( This Ryan 'Betrayed His Philosophy' story shit was so lame, and demonstrates the game writer's lack of knowledge about History and Society )).

Arthurdale - FDRs Socialist Show Town - A Little History Lesson from the Desk of Andrew Ryan :

*NOTE - THIS IS REAL HISTORY* [8]

A miserable Socialism failure intended as a pattern for 'The Rest of America'
Non-viable in any Economic sense ( wastefully paid for with Depression Era tax-dollars, taxpayer funded 'experiment' )
Its Subsidized Industries ( to give residents employment ) failed over and over
Wonderful for Sound Bite Propaganda ( when you avoided mentioning its complete failure )
Had 4 X Cost Overuns for things which never delivered what they planned/promised[9]
Not a 'Potemkin Village', because its failures were all too plain to FDR (most people have never heard of it).

Novel - Bioshock : Rapture

The Novel author describes Ryan (1945) as a "tycoon owning a significant chunk of America's coal, its second largest railroad and Ryan Oil. ( McDonagh saw the name on the Skyscraper he meets him in so add Real Estate. )

The coal and railroad investments are bosh. ( Pennsylvania RR or New York Central ?? Sorry, No. )

Oil would be the expanding industry.

The game speaks of Power Engineer Ryan (Howard Hughes-esque), as per what was achieved at Hephaestus is more along the lines of Power Generation. Electricity was a significantly expanding industry.

Having some associated Construction would be another handy component ( as in Big Concrete things - dams and such ).

JasJolene
JASMINE JOLENE

Jasmine Jolene ( Ryan's one-time mistress involved in the 'Jack'/WYK BS1 events. )

Ryan allegedly kills her for some serious reason. I posit that she betrayed Ryan selling his unborn child to Fontaine for (no doubt) nefarious reasons. For Ryan, betrayal is a serious thing.

Ryanscopter
SKY RYAN !!

The infrastructure around the Lighthouse was extensive, and Ryan was frequently on hand inspecting the progress.

Disneyandmickey
How original, copying that famous thing from Disneyland

The Game writers have to belittle Ryan and blame him for Raptures failure, but this idea here IS CORRECT. There IS NO FREE LUNCH. Things are actually achieved by talent, knowhow/skill, and sweat. The Sociopath Fontaine thought he could just steal everything others had worked for. He was eventually turned into Fishfood. Consider the game writers stole this image : One which some talented person originally came up with. Disney was the original, and will be remembered until the end of time. Any imbecile can copy an idea, and they are shortly forgotten.

Big Revelations - Ryan's Big 'Fix' (for Rapture) :

Alone_at_Last - Ryan is thinking of 'After' ... Of course, with Ryan being dead ( in the Solo games' story ), he couldn't later do any of these things :

Many things in the game are made to look like Ryan is the evil arch-capitalist, just exploiting his creation - like he keeps selling ADAM to everyone ( just to make a profit ? ), though it is when people in his City are already addicted, and many will go violently crazy without it. Keeping the Citizens addicted to that debilitating poison was THE LAST THING Ryan wanted to do ( ADAM could only cause disorder and lead to the ruin of the economy/society ). Thus it is illogical for him to want to continue with that because it would end his dream of advancement/achievement in his parasite-free world. Funny how the ADAM poisoning was NOT really shown to be a problem for so long ( minor mention but no 'big deal' made in the press as or continued mention in the Audio Diaries ) -- That is until Ryan suddenly became in charge of the ADAM ... very convenient for a plot which attempt to portray Ryan as 'bad'.

  • First, to get rid of the Atlas threat. Controlling the ADAM removes the overpowering destructiveness that the enemy Splicers are capable of ( allowing ending use of ADAM for his forces which had been done in the just to get parity ), thus allowing conventional security methods to be used ( no more fighting/battles ). Once Atlas was gone then things could begin to recover and move forward unimpeded.
  • Ryan's city takeover of Fontaine Futuristics ( to get more knowhow/resources ontop of his Ryan Industries Labs ). It was incredibly stupid for McDonagh to suggest to hand that operation to "Fontaines Boys" ( Dangerous criminals ? What was he thinking ? ), but then this was just one of many dim actions the Writers had him do to facilitate their strawman 'evil' Ryan 'Twist plotline' setup.
  • Gatherers Garden machines to facilitate applying 'fixed' ADAM products to all users ( particularly Splicers on Atlas's side ). This would be the avenue to disperse the Pheromone Control Mods ( genetic adjustments to make Splicers react to the Pheromone control agents and make them somewhat controllable ). How early did Dr Suchong suggest using this as a weapon against Atlas's Splicers ?? The GG machines may have been planned for that ( if not also to get ADAM in a regulated way to the populace, who demanded they be able to defend themselves against Atlas's terrorists ).
  • Little Sister 'Gatherers' ( and the Big Daddies to protect them ) were supposed to expedite ADAM Recovery for use in the war effort ( also a more distasteful idea : to get the ADAM out of the bodies BEFORE desperate Splicers started 'recovering' it from the bodies themselves[10] ). I place THIS BD + LS 'Protector+Gatherer' solution well after the Kashmir Incident ( And Suchong being alive well after the time he allegedly dies in the broken-canon of the BaS storyline ) -- no point in Protectors protecting Gatherers who don't yet have masses of corpses to gather from -- THAT happens AFTER the 'civil War' really gets going. And EVEN THEN, it takes a while to decide to start a project to modify the City's Maintenance Cyborg 'Workers' and THEN to develop the Bond(ing) stuff ( even BS2 was jumping-the-gun with Eleanor and Delta out 'Gathering' supposedly the night of the Kashmir Incident ). Such a project is NOT like assembling a set of clothing apparel off the shelf - it is a major undertaking to develop the symbiotic pairing 'in-the-lab' and behavioral training to find and drink the blood from dead people. It is then even bigger effort to build the full production process and all its infrastructure. ( Showing it be done so ridiculously fast was one of the many shortcomings of the BaS plotlines ).
  • Ryan would want to try to make improvements in the Plasmids/Tonics to alleviate many of the side effects in the interim before 'The Cure' (to ADAM-disease) was ready - to stabilize the population and components to stabilize damage already done to Splicers. It is likely many of Ryan's Security personnel were NOT Spliced ( Ryan did NOT need MORE uncontrollable crazies ), but had been trained with the advanced weapons ( Chemical Throwers, Smart Munitions[11], Traps, Crude Weapons, etc ... ).
  • Eventual elimination of ADAM use -OR- if possible, maybe even eventually making it 'safe' instead of a poison ( Ryan could see the potential in it as long as HE "offered a better product". )
  • The Vita-Chambers ( as an easily available therapy - those things were already everywhere ) might be part of the stabalization/human repairs, and possibly the eventual mechanism for the 'Cure', or at minimum a 'safe' replacement/substitute for the ADAM Addiction. Tenenbaum apparently was 'out of the picture' for assistance with a Cure, so Ryan had to pursue other alternatives.

The Antmen at Work :

Roughly 16 million people lost their lives during World War I; about 60 million died during World War II.

The People's Republic of China had 76 million lives lost at the hands of the Communist government. The Soviet Union with 62 million citizens killed by government action. Adolf Hitler's Nazi German government killed 21 million people between 1933 and 1945. In total, the 20th century saw 162 million people's lives lost at the hands of totalitarian governments.

Leftist academics and 'journalists' gave Communists, the World's most horrible murderers a pass, and sympathize with the goals of Communism : the total restriction/elimination of personal liberty.

Any Wonder Ryan did not like Collectivists ??? ( Besides seeing his Own Family members killed by them back in post-revolution Russia ).

BaS Orphans

Ryan took over managing the Little Sisters after The Rapture_City_Council 'Seized' all of the criminal Fontaine's holdings. Discovered were the children being used as Slaves who had been implanted with the ADAM Sea_Slugs to produce ADAM which Fontaine had sold. In Burial At Sea, these childrens' lives were normalized and they were put in with the general populace. Their welfare became Ryan's duty to see that they were sustained. Until solutions could be found to cure them, and while Rapture still required the ADAM they produced, they were to be taken care of. Unfortunately, in less than 4 months time, the terrorism started and all plans were changed to handle the City Emergency.

WHY DO I BOTHER ?

Because I WANT computer games to be better than what we typically get from the Game Industry, and perhaps by pointing out ClapTrap like BioShock Infinite, strong criticisms being voiced might serve to SHAME the makers of such substandard games, and MIGHT cause them to DO BETTER in Future.

-

I wont hold my breath that this will happen though.

Final Disclaimer : I am aware that various Fanbois think any kind of negative or different comments about BioShock makes me a "Poo Poo Head" ( in their minds ), and they feel fully justified in their 'Being So Offended' by my contrary ideas, and for their fervent wish to Silence anyone talking/thinking expressing such things ...

But I don't give a Rodents Rectum about such small-mindedness and slavish infantile infatuation with a game ( or its writers ), Nor for those who merely complain-whine out of their own Attention Whoring mental issues.
